You have things like grapheme-color synesthesia where people really do experience things different. They might see 2s as blue and 5s as green. So if they ever saw a 2 it would be blue. Like 5 5 5 5 2 5 5. Even though the numbers are all the same color to us someone with the synesthesia would see those numbers there in the color their mind associates them with automatically.

Here’s the standard color wheel set to Red, Blue, Yellow as primary colors.

You’ll notice that magenta is represented as almost a whole different color. It’s light red in the CMYK, light purple in RGB.

And

Cyan, baby blue, sky blue, etc. isn’t represented. Instead you get a blue-purple they call violet.

Blue-Purple - Indigo

Light Purple - Red-Purple - Fushsia

Even if someone doesn’t know what a true “Indigo” looks like they are still experiencing that color for what it is. They will just call it Bluish-Purple or Purplish-Blue. And unless it really was the exact mix of 50/50 blue and purple it wouldn’t be indigo. It would be a equivalent to a Redish-Orange. A Bluish-Indigo or Purplish-Indigo.

Your language doesn’t change your perception of color.

The primary colors being Red, Yellow, Blue. Is made up. There’s no reason those should be the three primary colors.

Magenta, Yellow, and Cyan could be the primary colors if you were taught that.

In that color wheel orange is an intermediate color. The intermediate color between green and yellow can be called chartreuse.

Did you know chartreuse as a color or did you just know it as yellow-green?

Do you not preceve the color chartreuse the same as someone that just knows that name?

You can perceve all the difference colors on this wheel without needing an official word.

As you can see “Brown” is just a darker orange.

Your phone screen only uses three colors to represent all colors.

If you printed out the photo of the dress the “illusion” wouldn’t work.

The 3 colors used to make the blue dress in warm “gold” light is what allows your brain to interpret it as yellow.

If anything it helps prove that people basically see in the same way. Just if your brain adjusts for the backlight tone. You either saw blue or yellow. No one was saying purple or orange.

If you took mushrooms and saw purple you’d be hallucinating. Your brain is giving you false information.

Seeing it as yellow isn’t false information but a different interpretation of the given material

Counting to 100 is like learning to read. Yes both are basic tools needed to learn English or math.

Yes history is important and definitely worth telling people. But having them memorize stuff that you can look up in a textbook is dumb.

I could walk into any high school level history class and pass the test if it was open book and if I had enough time I’d probably find all the answers.

Anyone couldn’t walk into a Calculus class and pass the test with it being open book if they didn’t know how to do Calculus. Yes they could read the whole chapter and learn to do it then pass the test. But there’s no looking up the answers in the book. It’s not memorizing.

We know this is necessary because of cultures that are missing whole concepts like particular colors. The idea of right and left. So on.

Light red is pink. But a light blue is still light blue, maybe baby blue or sky blue.

Russia has the word голубой for light blue. It’s equivalent to our pink. Are we missing the whole concept of light голубой? No.

The cultures understand them being a different color and even more so they understand how it’s a mix or part of a color group. Being able to point and say “orange” when equal red and yellow are mixed isn’t a necessary skill. Like what would you say if something was a mixture of equal parts green and yellow? You could say chartreuse. If you didn’t know that word are you really missing out on everything chartreuse?

The right and left thing I think you’re referring to the tribe that uses cardinal directions? Thinking in terms of cardinal directions instead of left or right is a bit bizarre and I don’t know exactly how deep it goes. Like if i wanted to tell you to hang the picture to the right of the fireplace, I would have to know the cardinal directions of your house? Cardinal directions are extremely useful to use in English. East side wall of your house tells you exactly what wall it is. Left or right doesn’t mean anything unless I say something like “facing your house”. If I knew your fireplace was on your north wall I could easily say “Hang the picture east of your fireplace” meaning hang it to the right.

They do have a point. School should be about learning and developing critical thinking skills rather than memorizing who the 30th president was.

I know my schooling had a ton of memorization. Funny to think about now that I know I have Aphantasia because I always excelled in math and science because they are less about memorization and more about learning a concept to apply.

They need to teach kids how to use AI. It’s like people that won’t let you use a calculator in math. “You aren’t always going to have a calculator in your pocket”

My inner voice is just my voice. What’s weird is I can kind of hear David Attenborough’s voice. Like I know the sound and cadence but I couldn’t do an impersonation of it in my head and talk to myself. I believe if I practiced that I could but it’s similar to how I cannot change my spoken accent.

Honestly I feel better at 3d object mental manipulations than most people. While I cannot get an image of what I am “visualizing”, I am imagining it in my own way. Like I could build a Lego set in my mind and tell you how every brick interacts with the other bricks around it. The more bricks the harder it is but as long as it wasn’t an insane amount I could do it. I could read and imagine building it from the instruction manual and then really build the set with little problem without looking at the manual again. And l work as a Home Inspector on the side and I can remember a “3d rendering” of basically every house I remember doing. Where rooms are in relation to each other. Number of windows. Etc.

I have aphantasia, no visual mind images, and was thinking about the cartoon representation of the devil and angel battling on the character’s shoulders.

I learned counting sheep meant actually watching sheep in their mind. Could it be like that?

I’ll be the first to admit that I don’t fully understand hypnosis.

I don’t really dream that much. I normally fall asleep and then just wake up. I’ve had dreams before and I can’t say that I saw images or not. I want to say that I did see images because I would describe them as being very vivid and real like almost like I was experiencing it rather than just thinking. But when I wake up I cannot recall any of the images but know how the things in the dream looked and would recall them like I saw something in the real world.

But if my muscles are relaxed how is that supposed to put my brain in a relaxed state?

It means “no imagination”, but the truth is we’ve plenty of imagination, just not visually.

It’s not a coincidence that the word image is in the word imagination. Most people image to imagine.

We have learned you don’t need to image to imagine. If you would have asked me awhile ago if I saw images in my head I would have said yes because I can hold details of an image in my head and “see” it. It’s like I’m imagining an image to imagine.

Just like I can imagine what would happen if you placed a ball at the top of a hill and let go. I don’t need to see images or a video to “imagine” the ball is going to roll down the hill.

Phantasia is a word used by Aristotle to describe “mental images”. What is thought of as “imagining”. He described it as a mind’s eye.

Imagining is the term that is wrongly named. It could be used for only processing thinking with images but like you said you “imagine”. I have aphantasia and I’m just “thinking” about the ball and it rolling down the hill, not imaging it doing it in my head.

When someone says “Imagine an apple” I think of the concept or idea of an apple. I would need them or me to give more details about what this imaginary apple has. Green/red, leaf/no leaf, connected to tree or not.

The more details I add the more I have to think about it to hold all the details together.

Example, I know my house very well. I can tell you every detail I remember about my house. But if you told me to imagine your house and just threw details at me I wouldn’t be able to remember the majority of them. If I physically walked through your house I could remember a ton of details.
