The problem is that the book Author is an absolutely amazing writer, and the show runners were not good writers, so when the show surpassed the books, it was obvious (this is essentially the last two seasons). The show runners also rushed the ending because they were told Disney had a Star wars trilogy waiting for them. GoT easily could have been another 3 seasons to have a proper ending
