Back in '89-90, I fell in love with rap so hard that some nights I dreamed that I’d wake up as Big Daddy Kane, or maybe Kool Moe Dee. XD
I can still belt out some classics, last time I checked. “Bring Tha Noize” by PE was one. Rap sure fell off hard since the days of Public Enemy… 😕
As a kid in the mid '80s I was living in section 8 housing and spending weekends in Compton. While all the kids were saying straight out of Compton I was like “have you ever even been to Compton?”
But I could never be a rapper. Some say my rhymes are too short.
Maybe “Too Efficient” would work? “Too Effish?”
Actually that’d work as a rap name from a certain period, I think. Like, I remember there were rappers “Too Short” and “Too Nasty” from a certain narrow range, but it’s been years + years… maybe early-90’s, if so.
But shit… I also find it amazing that you went from S8 to having a farm of sorts in the Carolinas. Kinda wish I could move there and help out with that, mate, as worthless as my CFS/ME arse is.

I’m bloody-well stressed by my current shit, which includes reacting to the fact that an apt neighbor down the hall had bedbugs, and I’d not heard of it before randomly discovering that. Priority #1 is to get a local exterminator involved in BB-proofing my apt, just in case. But just… sweating bullets, here, knowing how devastating BB’s can be.
Those are no fun. I’m always checking for them when sleeping away from the house.

I mean no disrespect but this is a common trapping of a casual listener of any genre. As you said, you fell in love with rap at the time so I’ll bet you had your finger on the pulse. Since you’re not following it as close, you aren’t exposed to all the great artists out there. You just hear the (usually crappy) ones that make headlines.
I’d actually say my favorite era of hip hop is the current one and I’m not a big fan of the “mainstream” artists. There is so much more diversity, it doesn’t even feel right to consolidate it all in one genre.
I think this is why a lot of middle aged people still listen to what they did in high school/college. You can be a casual listener but music as a hobby takes time. And unless we prioritize it, it’s a hobby most people shed as that time dwindles.

I think Aesop might be the greatest lyricist in the game right now. Absolutely amazing stuff if you appreciate DENSE writing. The kind of writer who makes you look up the lyrics just to take in all the ways he’s so damn clever. Most albums have a theme, too, and he puts out a lot of them.

Hey now, Papoose isn’t a reinterpretation, he’s been out there since the 90s! But unlike most rappers of the era, his music didn’t get corny as he aged. Can’t really think of anyone doing it so consistently for so long
But yeah if you dug that track, you’ll love Bars On Wheels. Ironically it’s about how he thinks hip hop is dying but it’s still awesome
