I don’t make a habit of closely searching items I see near trails. In all likelihood I would pass by the suitcase whilst unaware of its contents, if I notice it at all.

What I would do depends on what I find in the case. If the case and contents look old, as if its been abandoned for many years, I’ll take the case. My $50k now.

If there’s a card with contact information, and it seems plausibly like someone dropped it by accident recently, I’ll try and return it to them. If they reward a portion as a finder’s fee I’ll take it, but fine otherwise.

But if its an unmarked mystery case full of cash alone, I’m leaving it. It was probably left deliberately for someone else. I do not feel safe taking $50k from someone who presumably makes cash transactions by leaving unmarked cases in the woods. No no no no. Leave it be. I was never there.

50k? That’s kinda crazy, nobody expects to find 45k on a hiking trail. Somebody probably really misses that 39k, so I’d pick up the 30k and make sure to very carefully handle every dollar (Wouldn’t want to lose 22k after all). I’d carry that 15k with me out of the trail and make sure all 8k is intact when I get home. That way I can bring all 3k to the police station and report that I found 1k randomly on the woods.

Pay for weekly grocery shopping for the next few decades while investing the money left over from paycheck.

Sudden 50k cash injection to a bank account is rather suspicious.

Call the cops. as far as I know if it goes on to be unclaimed and not part of an investigation you can take it. And if it is part of an investigation then you probably don’t want to become a suspect by taking it.

Down payment on buying out the apartment complex from my landlord and converting it into a non-equity housing co-op?

Damn, I wish 50k were enough of a down payment for that (maybe it is where you live, though).

It probably isn’t enough, but it’s still so much more than i could imagine ever having that the difference is negligible lol
