I know it鈥檚 unlikely to exist, but I鈥檇 be really grateful if it鈥檚 out there. My partners use Life360 for the location tracking, just so they know the other is okay. I鈥檇 like to join in on this too, but no way am I installing a closed source GPS if I can help it. They鈥檙e pretty knowledgeable about the risks of doing so, and are open to using an alternative service. Heck, I was the guy who got one of them in on Linux after ditching his Chromebook. lmao
For the record, they have all the data collection settings disabled, but how much is that worth, really? You鈥檇 have to trust the company鈥檚 word and even still, closed source GPS shit. Ew.
Any suggestions are appreciated!
I鈥檓 not sure if you鈥檝e heard of Paralino, but I鈥檝e been using it and I鈥檝e been happy with it so far.
Unfortunately, it鈥檚 not open-source, but it鈥檚 more privacy-oriented, end-to-end encrypted, can be installed with an APK, and subscriptions can be bought outside of the app stores.
It鈥檚 not exactly the perfect solution that you鈥檙e asking for, but it鈥檚 a huge step up from Life360.
I know this might not be an option for you, but I have used Home Assistant for this purpose. Simply install a HA instance and enroll both of your handsets with the companion app.
The challenge with apps like this is, that they need some kind of server by definition.
Let me know what you find.
Look into Zood (Android only), OwnTracks (iOS and Android), and Grid (iOS and Android)
Also recommend using these resources to find alternative apps, services, and platforms:
Another plus for zood, I dont know if its still being developed but it works well.
Thank you, I鈥檒l have a look!
