All I’m saying is fascism got Japan nuked and claimed the lives of millions of white people, the supposed beneficiary of fascism.

“The Axis (and by extension fascism) was a poor and misunderstood babby!” is tired cold war propaganda.

Fascism failed Germany so hard it got the country cut in half and occupied. It got Japan blasted with an experimental cancer bomb.

Fascism failed the persons of guys like Hitler, Goebbels, in no less spectacular but more intimately personal ways. It’s a loser ideology. Pwease be nice to my poor widdle loser ideology.

It’s true that Hirohito didn’t have the kind of dictatorial power in his own system that Hitler or Mussolini did, but there’s evidence that he was far from a helpless actor. It’s difficult to pin down his true culpability because the Imperial system was designed in such a way as to ensure that responsibility was diffused across every potential decision-maker, so that no one could be clearly held accountable for anything. However, he did make his opinion known and forced policy to change in directions he wanted by sharply questioning his ministers and phrasing his questions in such a way that his opinion was understood (a practice he learned from George V during his time in Britain). He also personally acted to put down a coup attempt from a radical section of army officers. It’s not clear if he could have stopped Japan’s invasion of China or the Pacific theater in World War 2 if he wanted to, but the evidence suggests he has at least some culpability.

Yeah it sucks that the way Hirohito is talked about is either; he was in total control and was calling the shots/ would have even been listened to if he tried to do what the military didn’t. Or he was completely hapless and innocent.

Like you said, he very well could have been incapable of stopping the spread of the Co-Prosperity Sphere if he was inclined to do so. And that is important, not for absolving him, but for understanding how power worked in Imperial Japan. The military did essentially do whatever it wanted and said it was in his honor. The Kōdōha did sorta lose, but they got off easy in the power struggles and showed how easily the military could exert power over the Emperor in his name.

The emperor is both powerless and a figurehead, but is able to completely stop a coup just by telling them to stop, and clearly has massive influence over people. Certainly sounds like an impotent figurehead to me, Pu Yi and Hirohito were two peas in a pod really.

I gave Primal a go a long while ago, but lost interest after a few episodes, I don’t recall why. I haven’t heard of UWE.

If you liked Symbionic Titan I’d give Unicorn Warriors Eternal a go. The main characters are a team that’s reincarnated through the centuries to fight an ancient evil until the reincarnation cycle goes wrong in a steampunk UK setting are very broad strokes of the story, Genndy had apparently been pitching it for years before it got picked up but whether it gets a second season is still up in the air.
