The meat of brown bears, a protected species in the EU, could soon be available to eat in Slovakia after the populist government approved plans for sale.
Last month, the cabinet authorised a plan to shoot about a quarter of the country鈥檚 1,300 brown bears in response to some recent fatal encounters.
We all know what happens when we shoot the predators.
We get far more prey (deer hogs etc.).
Then these prey graze far more and thin out the forests, which makes them far less biodiverse.
And then I guess that makes the forests easier to log.
I鈥檝e heard that the taste of bear meat varies wildly depending on its diet. If they鈥檝e been eating a lot of fish, the meat tastes awful - but after gorging on blueberries, it鈥檚 supposedly absolutely delicious.
Probably subjective.
Finally Slovakians can bear arms.
