It鈥檚 not possible to write compatibility layers in software. It鈥檚 not possible to write a data structure conversion script. It鈥檚 not possible to update and refactor code to modern standards.

I have no need to, so I won鈥檛. But the downvotes and your response prove my point: if there was a real need to, it probably would have already been done. In this case it鈥檚 easier and completely sufficient to just learn nginx鈥檚 config than it is to refactor it, or write the conversion/compatibility layer.

Json is no better when you are doing it by hand, might be worse. They came up with their own config because there was a need.
