Huh, you’re right. I checked the OED online (it’s a subscription thing through my library, here’s the link the OED “cite” button gives, let’s see if it’s paywalled: Oxford English Dictionary, “jig (n.1), sense 5,” December 2025, https://doi.org/10.1093/OED/1036112357.)

edit: well, I’m not a fan of that. Here’s what it says, minus the examples

A piece of sport, a joke; a jesting matter, a trifle; a sportive trick or cheat. the jig is up (or the jig is over) = ‘the game is up’, it is all over. Now dialect or slang.

Sure would have been nice to know this when my house got invested with fleas. No need to flea bomb, I just needed to wash my hands!

(got a pup from a household with inadequate flea control measures–they’d give him a flea bath weekly, but never treated the environment or their cats. They swore up and down he didn’t have fleas.)

  • Having a hardware solution to a problem doesn’t mean you had a hardware problem. You might have had a software problem that could be solved with hardware.

Basic example: I had an issue with the controls in a game, where I kept accidentally pressing the Windows key which swapped me to a different view. I’d say having the OS swap programs is a software problem.

My solution was to remove that keycap so I’d stop pressing it. The “proper” solution was some esoteric key press combination that disabled the Windows key.

Shout-out to my good friend, vitamin B12 supplements! B12 deficiency causes what I describe as “weird nerve stuff” symptoms. Pins and needles on the hands, super high heartbeat when I stand (as opposed to my normal high heartbeat, thanks POTS), a cotton wool inside my scalp feeling (similar to skipping your venlafaxine pill).

I do not recommend being deficient in B12. Luckily, it’s hard to be deficient on unless you’re a vegan or take a medication that depletes your B12.
