placebo@lemmy.zipto Selfhosted@lemmy.world•Do you have a plan for your self-hosted data if you die?English8·2 months agoThis is one of the reasons why I don’t host other people’s data. I’d consider this option if there was another technical person among users with whom I could share workload and risks like a sudden death.
placebo@lemmy.zipto Europe@feddit.org•French newspaper : Many Germans have a deep relationship with combustion cars. For them, buying a quiet electric car is emotionally hard to accept. English7·2 months agoThere are definitely die-hard fans of combustion engine cars, but realistically, the majority would gladly switch if electric cars were affordable and the infrastructure was in place. However, EU imposed tariffs on Chinese electric cars while local manufacturers failed to provide accessible options.
placebo@lemmy.zipto Europe@feddit.org•France's lawmakers vote to ban social media for under-15sEnglish1·2 months agoOn the plus side, kids under 15 should be taught not to give their names, ages, locations, or any other personal data on the internet
Yeah, but this ban won’t achieve any of this, but it’ll undermine everyone’s privacy and security.
Social media fuck up people of all ages. These bans don’t fix the underlying problem.

I was very confused when I read it.
placebo@lemmy.zipto Europe@feddit.org•Europe must stop ‘dreaming’ about defence without US, Rutte warnsEnglish2·2 months agoIt makes no sense for him to not consider the US because that would defeat the purpose of NATO.
The US has already breached articles 1 and 2, and made it clear they were ready to attack a NATO ally.
- The Parties undertake, as set forth in the Charter of the United Nations, to settle any international dispute in which they may be involved by peaceful means in such a manner that international peace and security and justice are not endangered, and to refrain in their international relations from the threat or use of force in any manner inconsistent with the purposes of the United Nations.
- The Parties will contribute toward the further development of peaceful and friendly international relations by strengthening their free institutions, by bringing about a better understanding of the principles upon which these institutions are founded, and by promoting conditions of stability and well-being. They will seek to eliminate conflict in their international economic policies and will encourage economic collaboration between any or all of them.
So it makes a lot of sense to consider how NATO would defend itself not only against the US but also in their absence in case of a conflict.
Do they sing and dance for fun? I mean, even for other animals dancing and singing is part of their mating rituals, so being better than others is beneficial. IMO, this predates not only modern history, but homo sapiens in general.
ChatGPT will never reach this level of creative writing.

placebo@lemmy.zipto News@lemmy.world•Minnesota US Attorney’s Office is bracing for a new wave of resignationsEnglish2·3 months agoIt’s so cute seeing Americans facing a wannabe dictator for the first time. Meritocracy never works in systems like the one Trump is building. It’ll take time, but they’ll get to the point where everyone in the system (including judges) will be working for the system. I don’t think people realize how small the window of opportunity to stop this is. It’s been done so many times by so many people - the only interesting thing about all what’s happening is that it’s happening in the US.
It’s probably easier to maintain clean and dedicated distribution packages rather than putting everything into one giant pile. I’m not a maintainer, but I imagine this is similar to coding.

It’s not that rare when such analyses shatter popular beliefs. Science is strong and useful precisely because we have such things.

Well, Denmark is a member of NATO, so…
placebo@lemmy.zipto Europe@feddit.org•Donald Trump says eight European countries(Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, The United Kingdom, The Netherlands, and Finland) face 10% tariff for opposing US control of GreenlandEnglish5·3 months agoTrump has admitted that ego plays a key role as well. He told the New York Times last week that owning Greenland was “what I feel is psychologically needed for success”
He isn’t even hiding this.

That’s not very typical, I’d like to make that point.
