Apalrd’s Adventures did a video on setting up a nginx server to cache Debian/Ubuntu updates. As it happened I had an old, brittle apt-cache server that was taking up a massive amount of space. This guy did all of the heavy lifting and I had his solution running in like 10 minutes. I have a proxmox cluster with about two dozen VMs running Debian and Ubuntu, so this was perfect.

Any of you other Linux weenies out there should give this guy a subscribe. He’s the real deal.

Honestly, I’m fine with that. I was in university back in the early 90’s, and the majority of folks on Usenet were either in university, or worked for large businesses or the government. The level of discourse was surprisingly high, especially compared to the sewer that is the modern internet. I dumped reddit a couple of years ago when it closed off access to 3rd-party apps, and I’m happy to leave it for the karma farmers, bots, and AI slop. I much prefer Lemmy.

To get this to work without a password, i dropped a file in /etc/sudoers.d that allows anyone in the sudo group to sudo apt without a password.
