I much prefer a client for usability reasons. My email provider has a poor web ui. I guess I’d need to change my email address to get round it. I tried the google web enail which was also bad. But google never care about UX. It also needed to refresh a web page on each click, where the client app is instant.

I can work offline.

I’ll not say low crime. That would jinx it. But certainly not high. I couldn’t find a worldwide city bike crime comparison statistic.

So far a cable lock has worked. Plenty of people here don’t lock to a fixed obstacle. So are more likely to be the target.

My ex splodged brown rusty paint all over her new white bike to deter thieves.

I want to get about on my bike as much as possible. So I want to reduce the number of reasons not to go. Good lock. Quick to lock up. Good lights. Cheapish bike. Insurance. I value the feeling of freedom to go everywhere in the city. Motion sensor I hadn’t thought about. I’ll take a look thanks.

Thanks. I have a basket to drop a lock in. I’ll not take a wheel off though. I’m after a quick way to secure it. It’s not worth that much and it’s not a high crime area. But I expect they will take an unlocked bike. So I don’t want an excuse not to bother to lock it.

Ok. U and folding locks on their own won’t go around fat objects such as a tree or lamppost. I’d need a second lock for that.

I also want to keep locking up time down to as few operations as possible. Transporting a lock that is unlocked, ready to go helps here.

Thanks. My city is not a high crime area. Nobody steals frames or cuts wheels. A mix of casual theft and organised truck load theft. As many people don’t lock or don’t lock to something fixed if there are just trees. Which is why a long lock is essential.

I’ve had spokes break on a regular basis. If you dont hear it, then another will break at some stage.

Just for those who’ve not tried it, hub dynamo lights seem to have the best all round experience in city biking. A hub dynamo is something worth considering next time you buy a bike. Although I’ve retrofitted by replacing the front wheel once.

Why dynamo lights? It’s a huge convenience, and means no excuses for riding at night:

• Never forget to charge, or check charge level, or buy batteries.
• Never go out without lights hoping you’ll be home before dark.
• Never have lights lost or stolen. Dynamo lights are little more than an LED + lens.
• Never attach and detach lights each ride. Just walk away.
• Never even switch lights on and off ever again. Leave them on.
• Never have to carry your lights somehow with you all evening.

There are no cli commands that I can use in my drawing and 3D modelling applications. Or when working with complex schematics. Where things don’t often have names. It would be unproductive to leave the app to go to the terminal, type in ‘the blue thing in the top right, No the dark blue one…’ then come back to the app to see the result.

Also, not all user types are the same. Visual users need different things from text users. That’s basic usability.

We’re not all IT people with no interest in UX.

I never use the terminal. It’s not necessary for me. I’m not an IT user. I’m not missing out on anything. Many things I do don’t even have a terminal command. It’s important new users know this if they are not in to IT.

It’s a shame Dolphin gets it wrong. I hope that bug has been reported. And I’d love to find a way for non IT users to mount the share as a workaround to the missing functionality. But that’s missing too.

Nice. Kup actually lets me see the Network. But then complains if I select a samba share. There is a popular bug report about this. I prefer sync backup to access documents directly, instead of kups scrambled backup files.

Plasma is great. But it’s missing an important feature. Apps, such as backup or sync, cannot navigate to network shares, to use as a backup target. Dolphin sees the shares ok, but its important to backup. Windows lets apps select network targets. Plasma should too.

Todays desktops from commercial and open source are all stuck in the legacy, file-app-document world. The tired old, paper inspired, pre-Internet, pre-mobile way of working. PDFs, online silos, 10 different UIs to get simple things done.

Commercial companies want to keep their monopolies and don’t want to spend on any development.

FOSS Communities have little clue of what the next generation user information space will look like. And will likely copy the commercial world again when it all kicks off.

The terminal is not a good way to interact with visual tasks such as drawing, 3D modelling, and working on complex schematics or where things don’t have names. Especially where the typical type of user is a visual, not a text thinker. Its not efficient to leave your working environment to go to the terminal and back either. And text thinkers are often not good at those visual tasks. So I’m not expecting terminal commands to appear in areas where I spend much of my time. I, like many, are not in IT.
