On one hand I’m not sure elaborating would be a good idea, on the other the broad strokes are “spin up a few instances and be a dick in various ways”. People are already blatantly doing that anyway, so it’s not really a secret. Federation is limited - who even federates, who defederates, any other limitations, community rules and whatever else, a bunch of stuff influences the actual content you see. Random fediverse happenings (good reasons, bad reasons, outright technical failure) have already caused a bit of headache on their own, let alone what a motivated malicious actor could do.

amio@lemmy.worldto Unpopular Opinion@lemmy.world•The Lemmy userbase isn't much better than that of Reddit.English1·3 days agoMoving around is not easy if you want to actually preserve any of your preferences. The blocklist alone tends to add up really quick. But I agree mostly on the communities: pure “if you build it, they will come” thinking, while it doesn’t really work that way.
amio@lemmy.worldto Unpopular Opinion@lemmy.world•The Lemmy userbase isn't much better than that of Reddit.English1·3 days agoIn theory. In practice I don’t think it works at all. Discoverability on this thing is pretty awful (bluesky has that issue too) and you would need that to be better and the actual experience of “moving around” to suck a lot less, for that to actually work.
amio@lemmy.worldto Unpopular Opinion@lemmy.world•The Lemmy userbase isn't much better than that of Reddit.English5·3 days agoLemmy doesn’t dogpile the way Reddit did.
It does. A bunch of us just happen to agree a lot more and the entire place is much smaller, so it doesn’t come up as often. It’s human psychology, people do this by default. Call me a cynic but there’s no place or case on Earth where that doesn’t happen in one way or another and it damn sure does here.
amio@lemmy.worldto Unpopular Opinion@lemmy.world•The Lemmy userbase isn't much better than that of Reddit.English5·3 days agoThat kind of mobility has limitations - I’ve personally gotten a supposed mainline instance rugpulled with no upfront way of knowing - tons of blocklist (because, y’know) and what few communities seemed worth following, all down the drain.
Federation is supposed to solve that problem but just doesn’t: it works inconsistently and with a bunch of arbitrary politicking involved: why’s this instance block that one, why doesn’t everyone block you-know-which-ones, etc. The idea of a “community” being instance level means that malicious instances have a lot of room to fuck around and make things awkward and unpleasant, as we’ve seen. It also makes discoverability and searchability doodoo.
Like, it’s technically true, it’s just not as practical and rose colored as it seems when people want federation to be a general cure-all for Reddit shittiness, instead of the one overhyped random implementation detail it actually is in all this.

I don’t even disagree that that exists, but that was funny.

amio@lemmy.worldto Unpopular Opinion@lemmy.world•The Lemmy userbase isn't much better than that of Reddit.English1·3 days agofederation keeps it from being corpo controlled
No it doesn’t? It makes it mildly difficult by making sure any corpo, if it cared to, would need to control a significant-ish amount of the instances. There’s no clear reason to do that, which is nice, because it would be pretty hard to defend against.
“Federation” is used on here as a magical buzzword that fixes shit, it doesn’t do that. It’s an implementation detail that’s meant to make certain things better but mostly only makes them more complicated. It just means that you have a bunch of minireddits that vaguely and inconsistently interact with each other and have a lot of overlapping stuff, communities and such.
amio@lemmy.worldto Unpopular Opinion@lemmy.world•The Lemmy userbase isn't much better than that of Reddit.English1·3 days agoOn which count?
amio@lemmy.worldto Unpopular Opinion@lemmy.world•The Lemmy userbase isn't much better than that of Reddit.English4·3 days agoWhich should surprise absolutely nobody - the user base is redditors and… people who used to be redditors. “Used to be” for various reasons, including being too shrill, insufferable, spammy or malicious… for Reddit. Not exclusively, though, of course.
Either way, whatever annoys you about Reddit, you’ll more than likely find it here. Y’know, to the degree you find anything on here between the ghost town factor and incredibly stupid architecture.

amio@lemmy.worldto No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•Why are people so rude on Reddit compared to the Fediverse?81·23 days agoThis is true. The fediverse is unpleasant in occasionally different ways but is unpleasant. Part of it is human psychology that’s hard to avoid (not that people are trying particularly hard), and then it’s amplified by the demographics here possibly being somehow even worse at the whole “alternate view points” thing than Reddit is - which I seriously would not have thought possible, but here we are.
Maybe if the goal was making “reddit but less fuckfaced”, it was a mistake to settle on the rather shoddy work of a bunch of extraordinarily angry tankies (possibly false flag although it’s hard to separate one kind of dipshit from another kind of dipshit pretending to be the first kind of dipshit), and/or extraordinarily angry whatever else these… people… are - I’m sure spelling it out would be some kind of -ist, and whoo boy - no, sorry, that’s probably sexist, damn. No, sorry, that’s probably religious persecution, shit. No, sorry, ableism again because what if people have colostomies. Oh sorry, “colostomy” is Greek derived so probably also offensive to someone. And suggesting that is probably also possible to frame as offensive somehow, if one really puts one’s alleged mind to it.
Instead of being banned arbitrarily from a sub because some shithead didn’t like you criticizing Trump, you’ll be banned arbitrarily from an entire instances because people are actively hunting for excuses to be offended, trolling, or just wildly out of touch with reality.
“I don’t necessarily think Marxist-Len-” clearly fascist. Banned.“Hey, that’s crazy, man” - banned. That’s ableism, don’t’y’know.
“Some people get tricked into voting against their better int-” can’t even tell what you were referring to, but banned anyway, just in case. Or because voting is fascist, or some other scintillatingly intelligent reasoning.
“Sometimes you can’t get away from Windows-” fascist corporate something or other, banned.
“Sometimes people get offended, or pretend to, and it doesn’t automatically make them righ-” (waiting to see how this one pans out, actually :P)
Getting a break from the (overt) right wingers is jolly nice, actually. The depressing upshot, though, is that it turns out a lot of the psychology is pretty similar anyway. The very people whining the loudest about the Reddit Gestapo get over here and immediately start the Lemmy KGB, but it’s okay because their views are the right ones. Even though one of the main guys is still a blatant transphobic asshole, which is frankly pretty suggestive of something in this bastion of hyper zealous… “tolerance”.
All to enjoy much less and shittier content… maybe it isn’t 100% worth it, which makes the FV’s hysterical self-congratulatory attitude pretty funny. Hooray, we have a deeply flawed and impractical, gimmicky bullshit architecture, thought up by someone who drinks Russian and Chinese and North-Korean (etc) flavor-aid! You even get different excuses when some dipshit abuses the moderation system, woohoo! This is like, the best thing since we ran over those protesters at Tiananmen square!

amio@lemmy.worldto No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•Why are people so rude on Reddit compared to the Fediverse?5·24 days agoPeople tend to be assholes. The more people in one place, the lower the chance of nobody being an asshole, and it does usually only take one. Then you add the karma system, which causes people to perform for the internet points. It’s not just people being a natural asshole for any number of reasons: people also reward the wrong things such as asshole behavior, Redditsplaining, zingers and stupid cringeworthy clichés. The karma factor is lower here, but still a thing.
That’s… really just wrong
Because people are stupid and market hype is dumber still.
