mcv@lemmy.zipto Programmer Humor@programming.dev•Scam Altman says it’ll take another year before ChatGPT can start a timer. An $852 billion company, ladies and gentlemen.1·12 hours agoI’m not surprised. LLMs are designed to handle words, and they’re bad at everything else. Sure, everything can be expressed in words, so they can express anything, but that’s not going to make them correct.
Besides, they can also be wrong about the words.
When I studied AI in the 1990s, my department was working on a modular expert system that was great at logic, but could not handle numbers, so at some point they put in a lot lf effort to have it handle basic calculations, which involved defining numbers in logic. On a computer which is natively great at calculating.
This feels similar.

It’s blatant corruption, but because it’s going through the courts, I doubt it’s possible to undo and punish it.

Or they’ll make apis shittier because they don’t want AI using it.
However, Copilot has made it a lot easier to navigate through Azure’s incomprehensible menu structure.

Russia keeps throwing everything they’ve got at Ukraine, so to defend themselves, Ukraine has to starve Russia of resources, including oil and money. Ukraine is fighting for survival. Don’t like the way they do it? Give them better options.
It may be 25 (21?) km tall, but it’s also the size of France.

And arrests can absolutely help your case. I recommend the book “A blueprint for revolution” by Srdja Popovic.
mcv@lemmy.zipto World News@lemmy.world•Putin’s spring offensive in Ukraine has begun. Experts warn Trump has given Russia a window of opportunityEnglish2·9 days agoYeah, that is a very risky bluff to call.
It’s clear that Russia is not nearly as powerful as anyone thought, and there’s good reason to believe their nuclear arsenal is either severely neglected or was mostly bluff to begin with, but you can’t be sure. And any war on Russian soil is going to be hard no matter what.
Do kick Russia out of Ukraine; that’s an unjustifiable war of conquest that needs to be reverted. But make it clear that you won’t set foot in Russia and don’t pose a threat to Russia itself. That way you give Putin no excuse to go nuclear, and no reason for the Russian military to obey him if he does.

This is not a win in any way for AIPAC, but the loss would have been bigger if Kat had won, which she nearly did, so I guess that’s something?
mcv@lemmy.zipto News@lemmy.world•US Treasury plans to put Trump's signature on new paper currency in first for sitting president2·12 days agoThe signature of the president of the treasury that has always been on the bills had nothing to do with vanity, but with the president of the bank issuing the money guaranteeing the value of the money.
But who is going to trust the value of money guaranteed by Donald Trump?

That’s probably still more coherent than how they will spin it.
mcv@lemmy.zipto World News@lemmy.world•UN votes to recognise enslavement of Africans as 'gravest crime against humanity'English11·13 days agoSlavery has existed in many different cultures, and Africa has had slave trade after it was abolished in Europe and North America, but I think it’s fair to say that the transatlantic slave trade was the most cruel and inhuman form of slavery. The only form of slavery that may have been worse was the one Leopold II imposed on Congo.
It’s racism that made those forms of slavery even worse. I think racism makes everything worse.
I think the biggest contender for worst crime against humanity was the Native American genocide. That was also driven by racism. So was the Holocaust.
I remember wondering as a kid why those plugs needed to be screwed in like that. It seemed ridiculously overengineered.

I don’t think Johnson has to start it, does he? I think any member can initiate it, and if a couple of Republicans vote with the Democrats, that should be enough to make it pass. Unless he shuts down the House, of course.
