Not always, usually it’s an evolutionary arms race though. Recent paper I thought was really cool suggests the initial jump from single to multicellular happened because of a snowball Earth which changed the water temperature and therefore viscosity, making larger size equate to more efficient swimming.
Or reduced. Solar wind implants protons (Hydrogen) in the upper surface and causes darkening.
ZMoney@lemmy.worldto Technology@lemmy.world•A million new SpaceX satellites will destroy the night sky — for everyone on EarthEnglish8·14 days agoThe problem is that we offloaded “world leadership” to a bunch of ultra-rich sociopaths who only care about their own profit maximization. And they then made actual profit obsolete, since the only product they produce now is hype in the service of inflationary speculative assets. From a planetary perspective it looks like the human species is committing suicide.
ZMoney@lemmy.worldto Technology@lemmy.world•A million new SpaceX satellites will destroy the night sky — for everyone on EarthEnglish501·14 days agoDon’t fall for the clickbait reporting here. Musk has a history of making comically exaggerated claims. There won’t be a million satellites just like there wasn’t a 4000 km/h train, self-driving tunnel network, intercontinental rocket transport or Mars colony.
Never suggested he didn’t. The average age of Trump voters skews over 50 though.
As much as I like to shit on AI, it has gotten rather poetic lately.
If you add that these bullies were given high-paying blue collar jobs, cheap houses, and wives to abuse freely, it’s no longer an analogy. The Trumpist boomers literally had this happen. When this system broke they reacted to it like the selfish, hateful idiots they are.
ZMoney@lemmy.worldto No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•Has the scientific community ever reconciled with the fact global warming is going to happen and there is no stopping it?5·17 days agoDefunding is perennial and global, even if it’s not a targetted action like in the US. Consider for example that in the last 25 years the number of PhDs doubled while the funding of the National Science Foundation stayed flat. In the EU the situation is better, with funding at least keeping pace with inflation, but national funding depends on the whims of the current ruling party (I’m in the Czech Repoublic btw where we just elected a right-wing billionaire). Even in the best case the average acceptance rate for a grant is 10 or 15%, but in my experience it’s lower.
As for lawyers being in charge, I mean what’s the degree you go get if you want to enter politics? In China it’s engineering. In the West, almost a third of politicians have law degrees even though the fraction of lawyers in society is much less than one percent.
ZMoney@lemmy.worldto No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•Has the scientific community ever reconciled with the fact global warming is going to happen and there is no stopping it?5·17 days agoGeologist here. It’s really depressing being in the community these days. We’re continually being defunded and we know better than most what a systemic crisis this planet’s ecosystem is in. For some reason we thought it was a good idea to put lawyers in charge of everything instead of experts.

It would be better if we could just admit that a lot of people are fucking idiots and need to be prevented from making important decisions.

It just printed it and ballooned the national debt. I’m sure the global oligarch class will be happy to buy more US treasury bonds while the congress raises the debt ceiling again.

Don’t forget to clean your horse off every few hours by brushing it in the same spot 3 times. Just… Why
I’m really curious about your idea of a well-executed open world. Can you give an example? Also about the caring about the plot. I could argue your point about not caring about the fate of the central characters for any game.
The paradigmatic example of this is Orbán’s Hungary.
