After reviewing the entry, we noticed that the cutscene duration is about 19 seconds. As mentioned in the jam rules, the intended challenge was to create a real time cinematic between 30 and 90 seconds. We also shared an update clarifying how we would handle duration edge cases. In your "Anything else" you also mention it that you know it was a bit too short.

Because this entry is more than 5 seconds outside the allowed range of the edge case, it unfortunately cannot be included in the official ratings or be eligible for prizes.

That said, we are keeping your entry visible in the jam. People can still watch it, leave comments, and give feedback, and we very much encourage that. We hope you still see value in sharing your work and getting reactions from other participants.

Unfortunately our game jam is about cutscenes only and no gameplay or other interactions. Check the rules and FAQ:

• Create a real-time rendered cutscene in any game engine (30-90 seconds) with minimal camera control, like panning or rotation, to showcase your storytelling and cinematic skills!
• From our Goal: the 2nd GoedWare Game Jam Cutscene Edition has arrived! We're excited to explore this new challenge format once again, asking you to create a 30–90 second cutscene using any game engine of your choice. This time, it’s all about visual storytelling, real-time rendering, and creativity without traditional gameplay mechanics.
• The cutscene should be cinematic without interactive elements like dialog choices or player actions. Focus purely on storytelling!
• Question: Does my cutscene need to be interactive? No. The cutscene should be cinematic and should not include interactive elements like dialog choices or player actions. Only minimal camera control (like panning or rotation) is required for verifying real-time rendering.
• Question: What format should my submission be in? Submit a playable build format (e.g., .exe for Windows) that runs the cutscene directly, just like a regular game build from your engine of choice. The submission should only contain the cinematic cutscene, but you can include a simple main menu to start the cutscene and an optional credits screen if you’d like. 

That is why we have to disqualify this submission unfortunately .

We have discussed this as jury and decided to handle it as follows:

Cutscene duration is part of the challenge (30–90 seconds).

• Small deviations (up to 5 seconds) will not lead to disqualification, but judges will deduct stars in their ratings, and we encourage participants to take this into account when rating as well.
• If an entry is more than 5 seconds outside the limit (shorter than 25 seconds or longer than 95 seconds), it will be disqualified from rating.
• Entries disqualified due to duration will not be removed. They will remain visible so people can watch, comment, and give feedback, but they will no longer be eligible for ratings or prizes.

This was a small and quite rushed prototype in the end. My time management was not the best, which is always one of the trickiest parts of game jam development. There is a lot more that could be done, and I still have plenty of ideas in my head. I’ve now seen several people say they enjoyed this style of gameplay, so maybe I will revisit it in the future, expand it further, or create a new version with cleaner code😅.

My original idea was actually to show nothing outside the ship, except on the view screen during communication or combat, to reinforce the one room feeling. But another player also mentioned that having things visible outside would make it even more fun, so that is definitely a good suggestion to keep in mind. Improving the visual atmosphere is definitely on my to do list now.

First of all, thank you very much for your detailed review, your experience, and all the helpful tips, kind words and feedback. I really appreciate it. I am also glad that you enjoyed the prototype. From what I am reading, there are a few people who like the idea of being a starship captain, and I also remember those older games where you could replay moments from the shows and movies, like Starfleet Command.

Your feedback and comments absolutely make sense. My time management during this jam was not great, which is of course a classic game jam killer😅. The points you mention definitely need to be improved and could have been better if I had planned things more carefully. They are valid suggestions that I can really work with. Some things, like adding music to important events, were already in my mind as well, and I agree it would enhance the atmosphere. The UI can also be sharpened with the small details you pointed out. I am very happy you mentioned these things so I can learn from them and improve in future jams and games, even though time management will probably always remain a challenge😅.

I am considering expanding this project at some point, with more varied missions, a stronger sense of immersion on the bridge screens, and more going on in the world around you. For this jam, the focus was mainly on quickly getting everything to work, which is why the dialogues could sometimes break or soft lock. With more time, that is something that should be fixable.

Thank you for the feedback and the kind words. I am glad I managed to capture a bit of that captain feeling, even though it was still an early prototype. That probably also caused the soft lock. Unfortunately I did not have enough time to fully test and fix all of those issues.

Q: What is the theme for this jam?
A: The theme will be announced at the frontpage and on Discord when the jam begins.

Q: Who can participate?
A: Anyone! All experience levels are welcome, and you can work solo or in a team (recommended max 4 members).

Q: Can I use any game engine?
A: Yes! You can use any engine or framework, such as Unity, Godot, Unreal, GameMaker, etc. Just ensure your game fits the jam’s rules and theme.

Q: Can I submit multiple games?
A: Yes, if you have the time and energy, you’re welcome to submit more than one game!

Q: Are AI tools allowed?
A: You may use AI tools to assist with coding and asset creation (such as art, music, or sound effects). However, the majority of the code must be your own work, and any AI-generated content should be used thoughtfully and ethically. If you use AI-generated assets, make sure they respect copyright rules and do not resemble or replicate existing copyrighted content.

Q: What about music, fonts, and assets?
A: You can use royalty-free music and audio assets you own, with proper credits and licenses. Make sure all assets adhere to copyright and licensing rules. You may use assets you already own, such as those from the Unity Asset Store or Unreal Marketplace. Ensure that all assets are properly licensed and that you have permission to use them. Avoid infringing on copyrights or trademarks. Assets bought in the stores usually (99.9%) have the correct license to use them in our jam.

Q: Can I edit my game files after submitting?
A: No, submissions are locked after the deadline, so make sure everything is ready before you submit!

Q: Does my game have to be a certain format?
A: No, but remember that not all users have Windows/Mac/Linux devices. Browser-based games are a great idea to maximize accessibility. At least make sure a Windows version is available.

Q: Can I submit a game that I already started on?
A: No, it is required that all participants create their games entirely within the jam period.

Q: What are the rating categories?
A: Games will be rated on Art/Visuals, Gameplay/Fun, Audio/Sound Design and Theme, with a special Feedback jury category for participants who provide thoughtful feedback on others’ games

Q: How does judging work in the Community Edition?
A: There is no jury ranking in this edition. All results are based purely on community ratings, plus optional highlights chosen by the hosts for fun or creativity.

Q: Is there a Devlog or Easter Egg category?
A: Not in this Community Edition. The format is simpler and focused on learning, sharing, and giving feedback. These special challenges may return in future regular or themed editions.

Q: Is there a Feedback Award?
A: Yes. The only monetary style reward in this edition is the Feedback Award, given to the participant who provides the most helpful and constructive feedback during the rating period.

Q: How many ratings does my game need to appear in the results?
A: Games need at least 10 ratings to appear in the final leaderboard highlights.

Q: Is there a place to connect with other participants?
A: Yes! Join our Discord Server to chat, brainstorm, and share ideas with the community.

Q: Can I submit my game to other jams?  A: Yes, you are allowed to submit your game to other jams! However, please follow these rules:

• Stick to Our Theme: Your game must adhere to the theme provided for this jam.
• No Early Starts: You can’t start working on your game before our jam officially begins, even if another jam allows it. This ensures everyone has the same amount of time to work on their games.

We encourage creativity and participation in multiple jams, but fairness to all participants is key.
