How does your game meet GBJam's theme?
In Unlucky Luckie, everything revolves around bad luck:
The player jumps across platforms while facing unlucky symbols and superstitions.
Random unfortunate events challenge the player along the way.
Depending on how well you avoid or endure these unlucky moments, your future becomes more or less fortunate.
The game captures the same mix of frustration and humor that real bad luck brings.

I liked the graphics and the concept, but I found the gameplay frustrating. This one required a lot of memorization and having to go back to the beginning each time meant I'd replayed the same segments over and over again. Skill issue? Probably, but you might want to consider adding some delay and telegraphing when an unlucky event it about to happen—these unlucky events can unfold quickly but give the player a nudge so they can react in time without it being a guaranteed restart if the player hasn't encountered it yet. Thanks for making and sharing your game.
Thank you very much for the comment and feedback, it is appreciated.
The bad luck was a nice gimmick. As soon as I touched a cat, I felt like in Final Destination, on the lookout for anything that could come my way to kill me.
And then a spike floor killed me, I couldn't avoid it.
Solid idea, nice execution. Congrats!
That was precisely the idea, to create tension for the player. I'm glad it worked. Thank you so much for your comment!
That was fun! The bad luck is a neat spin on the troll platformer concept. Good work!
Ooh, congratulations! Thanks for saving Jackie from bad luck for now. I'm so glad you enjoyed it and played it from beginning to end. You're a legend!
Unfortunately, I didn't make it past Thursday due to a softlock.
I noticed the left side of the level had steps, unlike previous levels, and I'd also noticed you could jump on side-spikes. So with good timing, I jumped off the first side spike trap to reach the step. Everything lined up so well that I was certain I'd found an extremely well-hidden secret, but instead I broke the level lol. I helped Luckie to escape the confines of the game that was hell-bent on killing him, so I'm counting it as a win.
From what I did play, Thursday did seem like a considerable jump in difficulty compared to the previous stages, possibly just because I had a harder time with the falling spike ceilings compared to every other trap. This game is super clever though, taking the rage-inducing trap platformer genre and attaching it to a mechanic that helps to create anticipation and anxiety. It appropriately loops it back into unluckiness as well.
I appreciate that the game was consistent about every bad luck scenario translating into one trap. It never feels unfair, at least beyond what's intended. Having every bad luck trigger work differently was also really great.
I didn't make it to the end, but if it's not there already, a final time, death counter, and number of avoidable bad luck cues you hit would make for interesting end-game stats.
Also, I like the animation of Luckie disintegrating.
Thank you very much for your comments and suggestions. Thanks for pointing out that bug; I'm going to raise the height of the wall to prevent athletes like you from jumping over it xD. Thanks for playing the game; your feedback is very important and will help me improve it.
This was super fun to play.
It had good pacing - introducing the different bad luck mechanics throughout the game. It also had good tutorials for each mechanic.
There was a great variety in the unlucky events, making the game feel fresh throughout.
The last level was tough, but a great culmination of all the mechanics learned in the previous levels.
It's very impressive you did all this by yourself in such a short time. Very well done!
Thank you so much for your comment! Your words really made my day, and I'm so glad you played the game from beginning to end. You're a legend! It was a pleasure that you gave my game a try. Thank you again!
nice interpretation of the theme. some of those unlucky events had me laughing out loud! nice work
Thank you so much! I'm glad it made you laugh!
Very fun game! I liked how each obstacle could still be avoided even if you messed up and got unlucky! The game felt like Kaizo / Cat Mario but a little more fair!
Thank you very much! I'm glad you liked it!
Really well done! I need to remember where those spikes are better, they got me quite a few times... Fun memorization type platformer.
Thank you! Here's a little tip: you can remember many traps more easily by paying attention to the background. Maybe that will help you. Thank you very much for your comment!
I had a lot of fun with this game! I don't mind the die and retry aspect as long as it's clear to me how to get over the next obstacle when I fail, which I felt was the case here. I actually love the twist of having the black cats trigger the bad luck. Great job and creative entry!
I'm so glad you enjoyed my game, thank you very much for your comment!
This was fun! It gives a nice little twist to a standard platformer and adds another level of strategy. Great concept!
Thank you so much for your comment! My pleasure.
This was fun! I liked your theme interpretation a lot. A good "dying is funny" kind of game.
I'm glad you liked it, thank you so much for your comment!
Nice little die-and-retry game, I like that even getting unlucky is “good” because it sometimes allow you to bypass tough platforming challenges by remembering how/when misfortune will strike. Great entry!
I'm glad you liked it. That was precisely the goal: to learn from setbacks and be better prepared for them next time. Thank you so much for your feedback.
I love the concept! A bit hard though
Good work!
Thank you so much
Was definitely a bit of a rage game, and your cat placements were devilish.
I didn't have much fun with this cause I don't like these types of games but it was really good execution of the theme and the graphics and palette were great!
Thank you very much for your comment. I understand that not everyone likes this type of game, as they can be somewhat frustrating.
Yeah, this is cool. Feels nice to play and you did a really nice interpretation of the bad luck theme. Great fun!
Thank you very much for your comment. I'm glad you liked it.
I love the way you used the unlucky theme in this jam entry. The unlucky moments reminded me of rage games with platforms disappearing and spikes just falling on top of you. It must have been fun to watch people playtest this. Great game you got here.
I'm glad you liked it.
In fact, it was really fun during user testing, watching people right before something bad happened to them and knowing what was going to happen. I felt like I could see the future! xD
Thank you so much for your comment.
A very solid gameplay and it’s fun. I think it would be great if there were a little hint right before a disaster — like the stone shaking briefly or a cloud appearing above. Great game!!!
Thank you very much for your comment. I did consider adding a small warning, but I wanted the events to be unexpected, so that sometimes there wouldn't be time to react, and so that you could learn from them and anticipate them next time.
Lovely art and music, really adds to the vibe. I liked the bad luck mechanic, in that it wasn't rng but specific level triggers that you could learn. I think you could have just skipped most of the platforming section before the first cat, so there is less repetition on the first few playthroughs where you learn the ropes. Overall, great job!
Thank you very much, I'm glad you enjoyed the game.
If learning the level and anticipating bad luck was the main idea, I'm glad it was understood. I think if it were random it would be more frustrating than it already is; I also don't want bad luck to drive us crazy xD
Thanks for the advice. The idea of the first platforms was to familiarize people with the controls.
This is awesome, love the art, love the music, the mechanics feel great. I love that you can learn and it's not just completely random.
I'm so glad you liked it. If that's the point, it's to be able to learn what might happen to you and anticipate bad luck.
Thank you so much for the comment.
oh the animations ! so juicy !
and the cat mechanic is very interesting x)
unfortunately as I am not that good at precision plateforming I could not go further than wednesday
Thank you very much for the comment, it is a somewhat challenging game for people who are not used to platform games and also somewhat frustrating but that is what causes you bad luck xD
I encourage you to try it again, I am sure that your skill in platform games will improve
