"Izangi and his wife Izanami decided to bring about new gods and lands. Several attempts created the islands of Japan. Izanami died after giving life to a fire god. He followed her to the underworld. However, she couldn't return. Later, he lit a torch and saw her decaying body. She tried to stop him from leaving, but he created a barrier between the living & the dead, telling her that he would divorce her. In reply, she would kill 1000 each day. His response was to give life to 1,500 each day." Amaterasu Omikami, whose name means "Great Divinity Illuminating Heaven," is the supreme deity in Shinto religion and Japanese mythology. The most famous myth about Amaterasu involves her hiding in a cave, plunging the world into darkness, until she was lured out by the other gods. Amaterasu was born from the left eye of Izanagi when he purified himself after visiting the underworld. As the sun goddess, she embodies the life-giving power of sunlight and is considered the ruler of both the heavens and earth. #Amaterasu #JapaneseMythology #ShintoDeities #SunGoddess #DivineLineage #JapaneseFolklore #MythicalBeings #CelestialRuler #AncientLegends #JapaneseImperialFamily #Mythology #folk #artoftheday #aigenerated #aiartwork #AIArt #ai #aiartist #artistsoninstagram #aiartcommunity Japan Gods, Japanese God, Japanese Deities, Asian Gods, Japanese Mythology Art, Japanese Mythology Goddesses, Japanese Gods, Japanese Gods And Goddesses, Exploring Japanese Mythology

Izanagi and Izanami is a Japanese myth similar to Orpheus and Eurydice. When Izanami dies while giving birth, she is sent to the Underworld. Izanagi descends to the Underworld and is warned by his wife not to look at her. However much like Orpheus, his desires overcome him and he disregards all instruction. His wife is then forbidden to leave the Underworld due to husband’s misdoing. Sounds a lot like Orpheus and Eurydice, doesn’t it?
