The term 'supermoon', coined by American astrologer Richard Nolle in 1979, describes both a new and a full moon occurring at or near (within 10 percent of) perigee. A perigee full Moon appears a little brighter and larger than an average full Moon and is known by some as a ‘supermoon’.
