What is a grammar checker?
A grammar checker reads your text and corrects grammar, spelling, and punctuation mistakes. Humanit goes further than autocorrect: it returns the fixed text and a categorized list of every edit — grammar, spelling, punctuation, clarity, or style — with a one-line reason for each, so you understand the correction instead of just accepting it.
How a grammar checker works
Modern checkers use language models to read a sentence in context and flag likely errors, then propose a fix. Context matters: “their/there/they’re” or a missing comma can only be judged by meaning, not spelling alone. Like any model-based tool the suggestions are probabilistic — most are right, but you’re always in control of whether to accept a change, which is why Humanit explains its reasoning.
What it catches
Subject–verb agreement, run-on sentences and comma splices, tense shifts, misplaced or missing punctuation, spelling and typos, commonly confused words (affect/effect, its/it’s), article and preposition errors, and — in the stronger modes — wordiness and unclear phrasing. Every flagged item comes with a short explanation.
Four correction modes
Light fixes only undeniable errors and touches nothing else. Standard fixes errors and smooths obvious awkward phrasing. Strict polishes thoroughly for readability. Clarity restructures run-ons and cuts redundancy. Your voice and meaning stay intact in every mode — you choose how aggressive the proofread is.
Learn from every fix
The thing other checkers gate behind a paid plan — an explanation for each correction — is free here. Every edit is labeled and explained, so the grammar checker doubles as a quick way to spot the mistakes you keep making and stop repeating them.
Proofread before you submit
Run essays, emails, applications, and posts through the checker for a clean final pass. Paragraphs, line breaks, and Markdown formatting are preserved, so you can paste the result straight back where it came from.
| Mode | What it does | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Light | Only clear, undeniable errors | Keeping your style untouched |
| Standard | Fixes errors + obvious awkwardness | Everyday proofreading |
| Strict | Polishes thoroughly for readability | Important, high-stakes writing |
| Clarity | Restructures run-ons, cuts redundancy | Dense or wordy drafts |

Frequently asked questions
What does the grammar checker fix?
Grammar, spelling, and punctuation errors — plus optional clarity and style improvements in Strict and Clarity modes. Each fix comes with a short explanation.
How can I check my grammar online?
Paste your text into the checker above, pick a mode, and click Fix grammar. You’ll get the corrected text and a list of every change with the reason behind it — free, no sign-up to try.
Is the grammar checker free?
Yes — free checks every day, no account needed to try it, and the per-fix explanations are free too (not gated behind a paid plan).
What is grammar?
Grammar is the set of rules for how words combine into clear sentences — covering things like subject–verb agreement, tense, word order, and punctuation. A grammar checker flags where your text breaks those rules.
Does it do more than fix grammar?
Yes. Beyond grammar, spelling, and punctuation, the Strict and Clarity modes improve readability — cutting wordiness, breaking up run-ons, and replacing vague phrasing — while keeping your meaning and voice.
Does it explain the corrections?
Yes. Every edit is categorized (grammar, spelling, punctuation, clarity, or style) with a one-line reason, so you learn why it was wrong.
Will it change my writing style?
Only if you ask it to. Light and Standard preserve your voice and fix errors; Strict and Clarity polish more aggressively when you want it.
Can it proofread essays and emails?
Yes. Paste any essay, email, application, or post for a clean final proofread before you send or submit it. Paragraphs and formatting are preserved.
