Context

This MR re-introduces the (most important part of the) fix that was present in !8503 (merged) which was erroneously deleted during a refactoring.

Manually testing the MR

For new features and bug fixes, add an item in the appropriate changelog (docs/protocols/alpha.rst for the protocol and the environment, CHANGES.rst at the root of the repository for everything else).
