Catch and log any unexpected exceptions in for SPP dark launch

What does this MR do and why?

This MR updates dark launch SPP requests to catch all exceptions, so that git push is never blocked by an unexpected error.

This MR also removes and_return from mocks where and_call_original is also used, as and_return is ignored in those cases.
