Resolved Cleanup for cleanup/appr-checks-deploy This MR contains a clean and minimal set of changes extracted from the original cleanup/appr-checks-deploy branch.

That original branch had extensive merge conflicts due to being behind master, so I started fresh from an up-to-date master and reapplied only the necessary fixes.
