Configure how to view work items from the listing page
Release notes
You can now choose how epics open from the list page with a new toggle that lets you switch between the side panel drawer view and full-page navigation. This gives you control over your workflow preferences, whether you prefer the streamlined drawer experience or the traditional full-page view that provides more screen space and familiar navigation patterns.
Summary
With &10501 we introduced a new contextual view (drawer) to areas of the product such as Lists, Boards, and work item detail pages. In capturing feedback from users with the release (#523713), there has been a clear indication that some users would continue to prefer opening items on the List page navigating to the full detail page (rather than the drawer) upon click. Although we expect that once we introduce the ability to resize the drawer (#519644 (closed)) this may address some users pain with having a reduced area in the drawer, there are still others who have stated regardless they prefer to open the full detail page. Since the workaround of opening items with command
/ctrl
+ click
(or right click) goes against the intent of the drawer (reducing the occurrence of users opening multiple tabs of items), we should instead look at offering a configuration option that allows users to effectively turn off the use of the drawer from List pages.
Proposal
Introduce an option to toggle off "Open items in side panel".
- This will utilize the same menu we have planned for future display options, such as
Group by
and metadata controls (#393559 (closed)). - For now, this will be the only option within the menu.
- The button for this menu will be located next to the sort by options, and will be a
default
primary
icon
button using thepreferences
icon. - This setting will only affect the List page (not Boards or detail pages).
- The setting by default will be turned on (drawer is used by default).
- This setting should be namespace specific, similar to how the metadata options are being handled.
