CDR Associates has been running projects that revisit the legacy of the Korean design industry, beginning with “7080: Breathing New Life”, a revival of the 1970s–80s logotypes as contemporary digital fonts.
“Saem-i-gipeun-mul” (literally “Deep Spring Water”) is the second project in this series, created in commemoration of designer Lee Sang-cheol, who first introduced the concept of art direction in Korea and was inducted into the 2017 Hall of Fame. To honor his legacy, the project transforms the title logotype of his landmark monthly magazine Saem-i-gipeun-mul into a complete digital typeface.
The resulting Saemmul Typeface consists of two styles, each comprising 2,350 characters. The first is Saemmul 1984, a faithful adaptation that preserves the original character of the logotype. The second is Saemmul 2018, a revised design that maintains the identity of the original while placing greater emphasis on legibility, making it easier to read in continuous text.
