Imprint has announced The Magnificent Seven Collection, a new five-disc set of The Magnificent Seven (1960) and its three sequels, limited to just 1,500 copies.

The original is included on both 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray, with the three sequels on Blu-ray. Return Of The Seven (1966) will feature a (magnificent?) commentary by yours truly.

Imprint’s boxed sets are a jewel in anybody’s collection, and this one will be no different. There are a ton of extras — trailers, commentaries, interviews, etc. — and each film is presented in stereo surround and the original mono. Coming in March. Recommended!

Blu-Ray News #381: Walk Like A Dragon (1960).

Walk Like A Dragon (1960), a cool Paramount Western directed by James Clavell, is (finally) coming to Blu-Ray from Imprint. Watch for it in January. It’s a solid tale of racism in the Old West, focusing on Chinese immigrants instead of the usual Indians. 

Jack Lord gets an early lead, not long before Stoney Burke and almost a decade ahead of Hawaii Five-O. (Even in 19th Century California, he has great hair!) James Shigeta, who was terrific in Die Hard (1988), is good here — and Mel Tormé gets an interesting part as a scripture-quoting gunslinger. And, of course, Loyal Griggs’ photography is as good as ever.

Imprint always does a great job with things like this, even though they went slummin’ and got me to do a commentary. Recommended!

Imprint Films has announced a new six-movie, limited-edition Blu-Ray set, Film Focus: Marlon Brando. One of the films included is One-Eyed Jacks (1961), one of my all-time favorites.

It’s the incredible Film Foundation restoration, with the usual wealth of extras from Imprint. I’ll be providing a commentary, taking my book research and laying it on top of the film. It’s a real dream come true for me.

Walter Stacy Keach, Jr.
(Born June 2, 1941)


Few actors that I can think of have a list of credits as interesting as Stacy Keach. From Fat City (1972) to The New Centurians (1972) to The Ninth Configuration (1980), he’s made some terrific, and just plain different, movies.

He brought Mike Hammer into the 80s and kept it good (probably quite a task) though two series and a handful of TV movies. Plus, he and his brother James spearheaded one of the last great Westerns, The Long Riders (1980).

Just completed a commentary track on that last one, and more than ever, I’m convinced that Walter Hill made a terrific film and that Stacy Keach is one of the finest actors of his generation.

Imprint has announced Directed By Walter Hill, a Blu-Ray set of six films directed by Walter Hill: Hard Times (1975), The Driver (1978), The Long Riders (1980), Extreme Prejudice (1987), Johnny Handsome (1989) and Broken Trail (2006).

This is good news, first, because I absolutely love The Driver and The Long Riders—and because among the many extras to be including in this thing, I get to do a commentary for The Long Riders—one of the best of the many Jesse James movies. It’s almost certainly the most accurate.

The folks at Imprint do extraordinary work, always, and I’m overjoyed to be a tiny part of this one. Highly recommended.

Western fans and Peckinpah nuts have spent decades debating the merits of Major Dundee (1965). Nowadays, we also debate the merits of one DVD or Blu-Ray release of the picture over the other. It’s coming in a nice new set from Imprint out of Australia in October.

For me, the participation of Mr. Glenn Erickson puts an immediate Seal Of Approval on anything to do with Major Dundee. It’s his favorite movie, he’s certainly an authority on it (along with lots of other movies), and he’s a really nice guy. Nick Redman and Paul Seydor are also represented.
