Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania - Hell With the Lid Off! -- Steps up to Mount Washington

Look closely and you will see a small child crawling along these East Street steps in 1934. This view looks east from 1556 Howard Street on the North Side as the rickety and crooked steps climb from Howard to East Streets. Similar steps could be found throughout the city due to the hilly terrain. Pittsburgh built the 279 North Interstate stretch over these two roads.

Steps go up from Hillcrest Street to Columbo Street

Pittsburgh's Hill District as it appeared in 1951. The view is up Forbes Avenue from Soho. The then-new Terrace Village housing on the hilltop contrasts with older houses below. This is where my Grandparents lived when they arrived from Italy but were forced to move by the city as they expanded the public housing projects.
