Review : Woman Of The Hour
An extrapolation of a true story. Woman Of The Hour shows what women had to put up with in the 70’s in their personal and professional lives. We watch women being objectified, patronised, bullied, ignored, threatened and even attacked.
Sadly something that still hasn’t changed much today.
At just over 90 minutes it balances the tension whilst also allowing itself to breathe enough to be a slow burn. I admired the cadence and it’s deftly directed by Kendrick.
Spoiler detailing a scene detail I really liked
There’s a fantastic tense scene where Kendrick’s date (The killer) turns around to order another round of drinks for them. The female bar owner looks past the man to Kendrick in the background for confirmation. Kendrick shakes her head no. The bartender then apologises and says they’ve just missed last orders.
It’s a small touch but speaks volumes about how women have to protect and defend themselves as well as others.
As well as the very real and terrible events the film portrays in regards to the killings themselves, the bigger picture themes of the volume of fear and expectations people have to put up with because of who they are.
Thinking about our own attitudes and the considerations, just respecting and understanding other people is what stuck with me after watching this.
It’s well worth your time.
