Review : Final Destination Bloodlines

It’s interesting how different people react to different types of horror. I’m fine with that slow creeping dread of films like Nosferatu, The Shining, Longlegs etc. But I’m not great with pure gore. I just Can’t. My wife is my polar opposite. Being a nurse, she finds movie portrayals of gore unmoving. Creepy though? she just can’t do it. Funny how people are different that way. 1

Obviously, the Final Destination series is extremely about the gore fest. It’s not a nuanced franchise by any means. It knows what people want and it gives it to them. In buckets. Right off the bat, it had my family laughing at the ludicrous setups and results throughout the film. It’s a perfect mix of anxiety and incredulity with some clever twists along the way.  There’s a dark comedy and a glee to the setup of these rube Goldberg murder machines which has always been the main attraction to this series. The characters, the plot is almost on the wayside to those 5 minute bursts of insane chaos as a character moves towards their inevitable demise.

This means I probably spent about a good ¼ of the runtime watching through my fingers whilst my wife watched on, just chuckling away. 😳

Look. She’s a nurse. She’s seen way worse stuff in real life vs the CG gore in this. This is nothing.

My kids watched this along with us, and they really enjoyed it as well. It’s pretty safe to say that I don’t think they’ve ever seen anything quite like it.

Made me think about watching some more horror franchises with them. 2

As soft reboots go, they’ve done a great job of striking the balance. They absolutely understood the assignment. It’s been years since I watched the Final Destination franchise 3, and I’m preeeeeety sure I never watched all six. This is a perfect balance between giving old fans what they want and onboarding newcomers and lapsed fans to what the franchise is about.

If you like this sort of thing, and believe me, if you watch the trailer you very much know what you’re in for, it’s well worth a watch. Pure popcorn fodder, but in a good way. Heartily enjoyed it.

  1. She got through ½ an episode of Bly Manor before I heard the very sensible “THE KIDS SAID DON’T LEAVE THE ROOM… WHY IS SHE LEAVING THE ROOM” before saying “TURN IT OFF” a few minutes later 😆

  2. Man, I do love horror, but I haven’t really watched any for quite a while. We did watch a few of the Elm Street franchise a while back. Maybe it’s time for Halloween and Friday the 13th as we get closer to spooky season.

  3. Six films? They made six films?
