about

corto.alto – the genre-defying project from Liam Shortall – releases “VANDAL”, his new single featuring German producer & composer Moses Yoofee, out on Ninja Tune.

“I made VANDAL at the beginning of this year, during a period where I was pushing myself to explore the boundaries between live instruments and the sonics usually found in electronic music,” explains Shortall. “Moses and I worked together in Berlin on the vocal sample, using his sampled vocals exclusively as a melodic instrument rather than a lyrical one. I titled the track VANDAL as a reminder to myself that rules in music are meant to be torn apart.”

It arrives off the back of his recent nomination for 'Breakthrough Artist' at this year’s AIM Awards and follows his debut Ninja Tune single “DON’T LISTEN”, which saw support from the likes of Clash, Notion, The Standard, The Line Of Best Fit and more, with a first play via BBC 6 Music who called the track “an absolute banger” and over 1000 additional radio plays to date. It was released at the height of a summer that also saw him perform a notable set at Glastonbury’s legendary West Holts stage (drawing one of the biggest opening crowds in memory) and ahead of his upcoming headline UK, EU and Australia tour, which takes in a huge show at London’s KOKO on 23rd October as well as stops in Manchester, Bristol, Ireland, Italy, Germany, Poland, The Netherlands, Melbourne, Sydney and more.

Going on to describe the collaboration, Shortall continues: “Moses Yoofee is not only one of my favourite artists right now, but also one of my closest friends in the future-jazz scene. We have really connected on both sharing that same mission to blur the lines between the acoustic and the electronic, which made this collaboration feel like it was waiting to happen. We’ve crossed paths on remixes and projects before, but VANDAL marks our first official release together - and I couldn’t be more excited to share it.”

about

corto.alto Glasgow, UK

Limitation can be a creative force in a world where anything is possible, and for a young Liam Shortall, that pool of influence & opportunity was as diverse as any. Born in Glasgow and surrounded by music from a young age, he gravitated initially towards instrumental music, picking up the trombone, learning his jazz chops, and listening to the big band, blues, and ska sounds of his family home. ... more
