Forgive the sudden intrusion, but I was writing to confirm that the scene-by-scene, HAL-Frankenstein comparison was in fact original to the author featured on your website (“Kubrick’s Frankenstein: HAL in 2001: A Space Odyssey John Thurman, December 11, 2007) Even if the technical work of the comparison was carried out by Mr. Thurman, is it also the case that the idea of the comparison originated with him? I ask wondering if Kubrick himself ever explicity verified Whale’s Frankenstein as a visual blueprint for HAL’s first murder.
Any help you could offer would be greatly appreciated. I enjoyed the piece very much, finding it helpful in many ways.

The literature on Kubrick is quite extensive. I pored over it before determining the article I wrote was necessary. As far as I am able to determine, both the comparison and analysis are original to me. If anyone else had done anything like this before me, I would not have bothered to write it. Anything not original to me is cited. If Kubrick had said anything about it, I would have included his comments. I have never found any mention by Kubrick or anyone else about the relationship of the two films.
