Key Findings
• #Webloc is a global #geolocation #surveillance system that monitors hundreds of millions of people based on data purchased from consumer apps and digital advertising. It was developed by Cobwebs Technologies and is now sold by its successor #Penlink.
• In collaboration with the European investigative #journalism platform #VSquare, we reveal that Hungarian domestic #intelligence has been using Webloc since at least 2022 and continues to use it as of today. Webloc customers also include the national police in El Salvador.
• U.S. customers include #ICE, the U.S. #military, #Texas Department of Public Safety, #DHS West #Virginia, #NYC district attorneys, and several #police departments in #LosAngeles, #Dallas, #Baltimore, #Tucson, #Durham and in smaller cities and counties like City of Elk Grove and Pinal County.
• Based on the responses to 96 #freedom of information requests we conclude that governments in #Europe and the U.K. are highly nontransparent about their potential use of ad-based surveillance.
• Cobwebs Technologies has links to the spyware vendor Quadream through Cobwebs Technologies founder Omri Timianker, who now oversees the international operations of Penlink.
• Webloc is sold as an add-on product to the social #media and #web intelligence #system Tangles. Based on technical #analysis and other sources we show that Tangles and other products developed by #Cobwebs Technologies are used in many countries across the globe.
• We briefly investigate another Cobwebs product named #Trapdoor that appears to help trick victims into revealing information. Our analysis leads us to believe that Trapdoor can help facilitate the #deployment of #malware on devices.

@Amgine It's better that the information not be collected in the first place. However, sometimes that can't be prevented, or at least not without adverse consequences: For example, LinkedIn is a #California corporation, and the #EU and #Canada cannot prevent its offering "verification." They could prohibit offering "verification" to citizens or residents of the EU or Canada, but that would only disadvantage those residents relative to others when, for example, applying internationally for a job.
Thus my recommendation: Require that, if you're going to let people verify their identity or age on your service, then instead of doing that internally or through a company such as "Persona Identities," you must accept attestation with no additional information from, for example, Service Canada, Service BC, Service Alberta (etc., across the country), or any suitably equipped lawyer or notary public in good standing across the country, at the user's option. LinkedIn, in this situation, still gets the guarantee that a user is who they claim to be, but the #surveillance capitalist firm to whom they currently contract that task gets nothing.

The Trump administration just banned drones from flying within 800 meters of any ICE or CBP vehicle. Nationwide. No expiration date. The FAA issued the restriction under the guise of safety.
The actual effect is straightforward: journalists, activists, and ordinary citizens can no longer document immigration raids, protests, deportations, or any other event where law enforcement vehicles are present. Even news organizations with legal drone operations now face potential criminal charges for doing their jobs.
The Electronic Frontier Foundation calls it "a blatant attempt to criminalize recording ICE." This is not hyperbole. It is an accurate description of a policy designed to shield law enforcement from public oversight.
Drones have become essential tools for civil oversight. They allow recording from safe distances without direct confrontation. That is precisely why this administration wants them grounded.
This is not about drone safety. It is about transparency. And the message is clear: the government does not want you to see what it is doing.

Largest Dutch pension fund cuts ties with controversial tech firm Palantir
ABP, the Netherlands’ largest pension fund, has withdrawn from the controversial AI company Palantir, the Financieele Dagblad reported. Palantir is known to provide services to the American immigration service, ICE, and the Israeli army.
Six months ago, ABP still held €825 million in investments in Palantir. The pension fund for civil servants in the Netherlands has sold those shares, according to FD.
Palantir is globally renowned for its advanced AI data analysis software, which can combine colossal amounts of seemingly unrelated data such as online communications, DNA, fingerprints, financial transactions, travel records, contacts, and surveillance footage. The software is used by hundreds of intelligence and investigative services worldwide to track down all kinds of suspects. Amnesty International has warned multiple times that the use of Palintir’s software violates human rights.

2026 is the year of global awakening against central bank digital currencies. What was sold as technological progress is increasingly recognized as infrastructure for total financial surveillance and control.
The United States Senate just passed a bill prohibiting the Federal Reserve from issuing a CBDC until December 31, 2030. The message from lawmakers is clear: financial privacy is a fundamental right that must be protected, not traded for perceived convenience.
In Europe, protests against the digital euro are spreading across Germany, France, and the Netherlands. Citizens are taking to the streets, collecting signatures, and demanding referendums. Constitutional arguments are being raised: the right to financial privacy is enshrined in basic laws.

April 6, 2026, will mark a historic turning point. The European Parliament has ended Chat Control 1.0—the proposed legislation that would have mandated mass scanning of all private messages across the European Union.
For two years, the debate raged. Proponents argued that mass scanning was necessary to combat child exploitation. Opponents—including digital rights organizations, technology experts, and millions of ordinary citizens—argued that security cannot be achieved at the cost of freedom, and that infrastructure designed for mass surveillance inevitably expands beyond its stated purpose.
Germany became the center of resistance, joined by Austria, the Netherlands, and the Czech Republic. Their constitutional arguments, combined with public pressure and technical evidence about the impossibility of mass scanning without destroying encryption, forced the European Commission to retreat.
What does this mean for ordinary people? Starting April 6:
Email remains private correspondence, not subject to automatic analysis
Chat messages will not pass through AI filters
Personal photos and videos will not be automatically scanned
Encryption remains the foundation of digital privacy
This victory proves that civil society can effectively resist government and corporate efforts to establish total control. But experts warn that new versions of Chat Control are already being prepared under different names with similar objectives.

The Privacy Policy talks about two cookies - both Google Analytics, and two partners for gaining "audience insights". The actual cookie pop-up list 1.709 (!) so-called "partners", many with "legitimate interest". Basically all these are companies nobody has ever heard of.
I know I'm leaking info like IP-address, browser and device details. What I can't understand is how all these 1.709 little leeches can possibly deliver enough value and generate revenue based on this information. Who pays them, and for what?

Today, as the first #NativeAmerican to be the secretary of the interior — the first to lead any cabinet department — she has the opportunity to support the #FirstAmendment rights of the protesters she joined in the past.
"With her authority over energy development on federal lands, Haaland can be a voice for Indigenous and climate movements facing an urgent threat: the rapid spread of laws to protect 'critical infrastructure' that single out activists.
"Since 2016, 13 states have quietly enacted laws that increase criminal penalties for trespassing, damage, and interference with infrastructure sites such as oil refineries and pipelines. At least five more states have already introduced similar legislation this year. These laws draw from national security legislation enacted after 9/11 to protect physical infrastructure considered so 'vital' that the 'incapacity or destruction of such systems and assets would have a debilitating impact on security, national economic security, national public health or safety.'
"Many industry sectors are designated critical infrastructure, including food and agriculture, energy, water and wastewater, and communications, but most state critical infrastructure laws focus more narrowly on oil and gas #pipelines. While protecting critical infrastructure is a legitimate government function, these laws clearly target environmental and Indigenous activists by significantly raising the penalties for participating in or even tangentially supporting pipeline trespassing and property damage, crimes that are already illegal. Many laws are modelled on draft legislation prepared by the American Legislative Exchange Council, also known as #ALEC, a powerful lobbying group funded by #FossilFuel companies like #ExxonMobil and #Shell.
"Central to the new critical infrastructure laws are increased criminal penalties and vague, broad definitions that could discourage protest and particularly, nonviolent civil disobedience. Many laws make any 'damage' to or 'interference' with a facility deemed critical infrastructure a felony. Under #Ohio’s law, trespass with the purpose of 'tampering' with a facility is a third degree felony punishable by up to 10 years in prison and a $20,000 fine. In Indiana, a felony conviction is applied for any facility trespass, a crime that is typically a misdemeanor or fine.
"Vague language like 'damage,' 'tamper,' and 'impede' in critical infrastructure laws makes it unclear if, for example, knocking down #SafetyCones and starting a fire next to a natural gas facility are the same under the law. Many critical infrastructure laws do not clarify if they apply only to land a company fully owns or also to pipeline easements, which run through both public and private lands. At least some laws apply to both. Only a week after Louisiana’s critical infrastructure law was enacted, opponents of the Bayou Bridge pipeline were charged with trespassing for boating on public waters on the border of a pipeline easement.
"The combination of overly broad language and steep penalties in critical infrastructure laws make it likely that future activists and supporting organizations will be discouraged from exercising their First Amendment-protected protest rights. A lawsuit brought in response to the #BayouBridge charges will test the laws for the first time on First Amendment grounds.
"Many of these laws even extend beyond the protesters. In a proposed law in #Minnesota, anyone who 'recruits, trains, aids, advises, hires, counsels, or conspires' someone to trespass without a 'reasonable effort' to prevent the trespassing is guilty of a gross misdemeanor. In #Oklahoma organizations that conspire with perpetrators are liable to be fined up to $1 million. These laws may infringe on the freedom of association protected under the First Amendment. Indeed, the Supreme Court ruled that the illegal actions of a few individuals do not implicate an entire group.
"The criminalization of environmental protest is fueled by federal security agencies and oil and gas companies, who are often major political donors. For years, the Department of #HomelandSecurity and the Federal Bureau of Investigation have labelled activists at infrastructure sites as #DomesticTerrorists and violent extremists in order to justify further #surveillance and #policing. Government documents have been released that detail the FBI’s focus on '#AnimalRights / #EnvironmentalExtremism,' describing even #NonviolentProtesters as #extremists.
"At Standing Rock, a private security firm [#Blackwater] hired by the pipeline companies consistently referred to protesters as 'terrorists' while working with law enforcement. Ahead of the #KeystoneXLPipeline protests in 2018, #DHS agents held an '#AntiTerrorism training' for state and local authorities. In contrast, members of the #FarRight militant group the #ThreePercenters have established a significant presence at oil and gas plants with little law enforcement reaction.
"To be sure, as the recent power outages in Texas showed so vividly, the United States needs reliable energy. But it’s questionable whether pipeline construction sites that could feasibly be moved or replaced with renewable energy sources should legitimately be considered 'vital' to the energy grid. Furthermore, a singular focus on this aspect of security comes at the cost of others. Whose essential resources do pipeline projects protect and whose do they threaten? Black Americans are disproportionately likely to live near natural #GasPipelines and experience higher #CancerRisk due to unclean air. An oil spill from the Dakota Access Pipeline could devastate the #SiouxTribe’s water source. Meanwhile, on some reservations, 10 percent of households lack electricity and as many as 40 percent of households must haul water and use outhouses. The well-being of these communities must count too.
"The rise in critical infrastructure laws may foreshadow more anti-protest legislation to come. A similar wave of anti-protest laws has already begun in response to the 2020 #BlackLivesMatter protests. State legislators contemplating critical infrastructure laws should bear in mind that laws that criminalize trespassing and protect the safety of construction workers and law enforcement already exist. Critical infrastructure laws don’t fill an unmet need — they only raise the penalties for specific groups of people. Courts adjudicating #FirstAmendment challenges in the coming years should recognize that these laws are overbroad and impose disproportionately severe penalties that chill freedom of assembly and association.
"As secretary of the interior, Haaland promises to uplift the voices of Indigenous and climate protesters in the Biden administration. State legislators, law enforcement, and the fossil fuel industry should follow suit and listen to these activists rather than suppressing constitutionally protected activity under the guise of national security."

"A mass hacking campaign targeting iPhone users in Ukraine and China used tools that were likely designed by U.S. military contractor L3Harris, TechCrunch has learned. The tools, which were intended for Western spies, wound up in the hands of various hacking groups, including Russian government spooks and Chinese cybercriminals.
Last week, Google revealed that over the course of 2025 it discovered that a sophisticated iPhone-hacking toolkit had been used in a series of global attacks. The toolkit, dubbed “Coruna” by its original developer, was made of 23 different components first used “in highly targeted operations” by an unnamed government customer of an unspecified “surveillance vendor.” It was then used by Russian government spies against a limited number of Ukrainians and finally by Chinese cybercriminals “in broad-scale” campaigns with the goal of stealing money and cryptocurrency.
Researchers at mobile cybersecurity company iVerify, which independently analyzed Coruna, said they believed it may have been originally built by a company that sold it to the U.S. government.
Two former employees of government contractor L3Harris told TechCrunch that Coruna was, at least in part, developed by the company’s hacking and surveillance tech division, Trenchant. The two former employees both had knowledge of the company’s iPhone hacking tools. Both spoke on condition of anonymity because they weren’t authorized to talk about their work for the company."
