This server runs the snac software and there is no automatic sign-up process.
I know that other people have been here before, and if I stay here long enough surely someone will wander through and by.
But for now, I have this quiet, secluded spot all to myself, so I'll just poke around the driftwood and the sand, look out to sea, breathe deep, and completely immerse myself in peace.

Recently to me : "AI can help speed up your coding. Of course you have to watch it and check out what it does, there always needs to be a human in-between. You just have to know how to use it well to get good results."
Further back: "it's like having an army of interns."
So... You are expected to spend you time learning how to best use this thing to maybe, hopefully probably generate code that you need to then review and hopefully detect how it's probably subtly wrong, then fix that and simultaneously also try to convince the tool to pretty please not do that thing again, (for which it will gaslight you saying it won't, but you also know it will.)
.... OR, I can use that time to learn how to do it myself, do it and know what and how I did it, also learning how I could be wrong, but at least my meaty neuronal structure is actually capable of learning.
I hate trying to be employed in this industry now.
Can we have the blockchain days back? It would be better. Though not by a lot.

From CTV News: https://www.ctvnews.ca/vancouver/article/texting-a-stranger-is-better-for-reducing-loneliness-than-an-ai-chatbot-study-finds/
"The study found that only those who texted with a fellow human reported feeling less lonely at the end of the experiment.
'We thought that interacting with AI might be as helpful as texting with a random fellow first-year student,' said the study’s author, psychology PhD candidate Ruo-Ning Li, in a media release.
'But to our surprise, only the human-to-human texting reduced loneliness over time. The chatbot, even though we designed it to be the ideal supportive friend, didn’t shift loneliness.'"

Gen AI is unsustainable in every imaginable way.
If governments in the west, especially the US, weren't totally corrupt and actually served the interests of ordinary citizens, Gen AI would be illegal.
People need to realize that no politician is going to rescue us. We need to take matters into our own hands. I founded Stop Gen AI nearly a year ago. Check out the media coverage we've received from the top menu. stopgenai.com
Also we are planning workshops to show people how to avoid Gen AI. And we're also planning a AA-like support group over video for Gen AI chatbot addicts.
We need someone who has overcome chatbot addiction to lead the group. We also need planning tips from you. Please visit stopgenai.com for more information.

Looking for new #music can be really hard, especially when you try to avoid algorithms. I find myself searching if a band I just discovered and like is AI. The killer is when you discover "AI music" on #Bandcamp. Then it turns into a whole thing where I have to go report them for violating Bandcamp's Generative AI policy.
The search continues, and it is a minefield. This is a perfect example: I found a new metal album, and the music is actually human-made. But they wrapped the final product in clearly algorithmic, uncanny valley "AI artwork." Your eyes are immediately lied to before you even press play. It’s exhausting.
I have a confession: the search just broke my radar. I thought I found a killer new Power Metal band called Saint Reaper. The album sounded incredible, and I was about to recommend it right here.
Then I dug into the background. The "band" is totally fake.
I only realized it was AI when I traced it back to a YouTube network called "Hard & Melodic Music Records" that pumps out fully polished albums for multiple fake bands every few weeks. They even fabricated fake human names for the band members to bypass Bandcamp’s human only rules.
It is absolutely heartbreaking that finding indie music now requires forensic accounting to avoid algorithmic content farms. The deception is deliberate.

*sigh* so The 8-Bit Guy (well-respected retro computing YouTuber and long time one of my favorite channels) has gone AI now. His last video is illustrated by AI-generated imagery, and he even added a section where he just prompts chatbots with minimal commentary, including Grok, of all things. Really hurts to unsubscribe that one, but this crosses multiple red lines.

So when I look around at code editors I'm kinda fucked. Vim is AI slop. Emacs isn't yet, but it's also not a simple tool that does one thing well. Almost every IDE that's cross platform enough for my needs either gets in my way or is fully embracing AI slop.

No more #Maine #DataCenters for now, lawmakers say
Lawmakers advanced a measure that drew attention last month when one senator said it could kill a previously unannounced project in Sanford.
by Daniel Kool, Posted March 5, Updated March 6, 2026
"Maine lawmakers voted Thursday to advance a bill that would stop the development of new data centers in the state for more than a year.
"The bill, #LD307, would create a temporary limitation on data centers with electric loads of at least 20 megawatts by preventing the state, local governments and quasi-governmental agencies from issuing permits or other approvals until 90 days after the first session of the 133rd Legislature adjourns.
"That will likely be around October 2027, the bill’s sponsor, said Rep. Melanie Sachs, D-Freeport.
"That would give a new “Data Center Coordination Council,” also created by the bill, time to study and review the potential impacts of building the centers in Maine. The Department of Energy Resources would be responsible for convening the body.
"Sachs has said the restriction is designed to address future growth without impeding projects that are already well underway, such as one pegged for the former Loring Air Force Base.
"Members of the Legislature’s Energy, Utilities and Technology Committee have debated the bill for weeks.
"On Thursday, they voted 8-5 in favor of passing the bill with amendments, sending it to the broader Legislature. The committee vote fell along party lines, with Democrats supporting the measure."

Does anyone have any links, podcasts, video, especially writing on deeply examining #AI/LLMs in non copyright spaces? Like, as an example, I’m in the fan fiction community a lot. Yes, of course there are loads of people that will happily generate slop in those/these spaces, but it seems to never be willingly promoted by readers. If it is promoted, it’s purely accidental and or the output was so heavily edited that it transformed into human writing again. This could be purely personal experience but in my case, I find that it really is not a big thing in those spaces. In short, everyone gives it the middle finger by not even acknowledging its existence in those spaces. Not a head in the sand kind of way but just a collective discussing great work instead. The AI evangelist seem to be very bored of these kinds of spaces and I’m trying to figure out if it’s personal experience or not #NoAI #LLM #AntiAI
Whether you are concerned or not about the harm caused by the technologies pushed on us with the current AI Hype, I highly recommend watching this excellent interview by 404 Media's @samleecole with @alex and @emilymbender from the DAIR Institute: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UwBZiuH-1QY
And I say "whether you are concerned or not" because this will affect you one way or another, whether you care about it or not. In fact, it very likely already does.
If you are enabling an AI feature scanning all your emails, consider this will also scan the emails people have sent you. This information could include personal or otherwise legally protected information.
If this data leaks later (as it regularly happens with these systems), this could mean severe legal consequences for you down the road.
YOU are responsible for protecting the data of others under your custody.
This includes the messages and emails others send to you.
AI corporations can't get your money, because most people don't want to pay for that. And they need a lot of money to justify their investment.
So they're going after government contracts, with their powerful network of lobbyists. That way, your government can give them your money anyway. To pay for that, they will very likely cut in public services.
If you don't want that to happen, email or call your government representatives.
I just bought a hardcover copy of The AI Con, written by @alex and @emilymbender.
I'm so glad I heard about this book. I can't wait to start reading it!
I'm looking for a good summary article about why relying on AI search results for everything is a bad idea.
I have a friend who is deep in the rabbit hole of Google Gemini. She uses it for everything, and trusts the slop it generates for her above the info on reliable websites. She does not want to believe me when I tell her the instant answers her phone gives her are often wrong and sometimes dangerously so. She's relying on it now for medical advice, even over the advice of her doctor.
Could someone recommend a clear, well-written and concise article for someone who is not at all tech literate?
My friend is not stupid, she's just been wildly misled by tech billionaires and their propaganda. She still thinks facebook is a nice place to put her eyes. But she is open to conversation. I just need to convince her that I'm not the only person who thinks Google Gemini is bad for her health.

I'm seeing a lot of reactions to LLM value extraction that stand on copyright, or where people are reducing their contribution to the commons as a response. This feels like throwing the game to me: the worst move in a hard situation.
I would like to thank the nascent "AI" industry for their significant contributions to all manner of artistic and creative endeavours in today's society: writing, coding, art, music, and everything else. [1]
Because they have single-handedly created entire new markets for all of these things - new categories such as "writing with guaranteed no AI", "coding with guaranteed no AI", "art with guaranteed no AI", "music with guaranteed no AI", etc. Without them, these whole classes of creative output would simply not exist.

Hey there, some personal news: I've decided to move on and am therefore looking for a new job starting July.
I loved serving as a program manager with open source projects involving some of the most brilliant software developers out there.
In a future job, I'd like to continue working near the intersection of open source, funding, business, policy and the societal impact of digital technology. But that's a small niche and so I hope that this post might open some doors through my contacts here. Are there OSS foundations or (non-) government orgs looking for staff?
Being a software developer at heart, I have been excited about tech all my life and later found myself involved in various software projects and business ventures big and small. I speak both fluent Nerd and fluent Business and frequently helped translating between the two during my career.
I'm aware that my requirements are a strong filter: Part-time and remote, German timezone. I'm also fairly unenthusiastic about the current generative AI / LLM hype and would prefer to work outside of that bubble.
If you have possible leads, I'd be grateful to hear about it. Thanks in advance and thanks for sharing.

The #future of #Microsoft #Windows is downright terrifying. If their previous OS releases haven't motivated you to switch to #Linux or some kind of #BSD, then after watching this video I think you will be.
Some growing key questions here really are:
How to defend or adapt disciplines (not just artistic/cultural ones) against this kind of semantic hollowing out of what it means to have skills, experience and expertise in a(ny) field...
What approaches, qualities and "values" (physical, ethical, social/humanist, environmental, resource use) should we (or still can we) be focusing on, which are much harder and more costly for AI companies to mine/extract & subvert?
How to defend actual skills against the emulation of skills, or rather just the appearance of skills? How could a society even function if it only encourages and celebrates the latter?
What does society actually value in art/creativity/culture? If art is free to produce (of course that'll always only ever be an illusion!), funding, possession, collection & speculation of new work would also become meaningless (and only benefit pre-AI era works/collectors). In the larger picture, what do people actually value in culture, politics and striving for more peaceful existence which enables more of the former (pluralistic art/culture) in the first place?
What will be the combined impact of AI & robotics on fields which are currently still thinking themselves more safe (from exploitation) because there's a strong physical element/process to them?
Will art/culture/craft become more performance, experiential/ephemeral again only? Like music before recordings or Buddhist sand paintings with an explicit act of destruction at the end as key philosophical concept? Both of which also have more of a social element to them...

Hey @peter
You developed Gecko and you have shared my posts before.
My political activism group Stop Gen AI and @alexia both keep lists of Gen AI-free software.
I tend to recommend LibreWolf and Tor Browser, which are both, as you probably know much better than I do, forks of Firefox and great grandchildren of the versions of Firefox with Gecko you were directly a part of.
Whereas Alexia and some other devs are concerned that with the Gen AI fuckery Mozilla is into these days (none of us trust the new Firefox AI "killswitch" at all) will make it difficult for the developers of Firefox forks to continue to keep Gen AI out of their browsers.
As, to the best of my knowledge, all currently supported web browsers for modern endpoints use either Firefox or Chrome/Chromium "upstream," and we know how evil Google is... There may be a need for a new web rendering engine from scratch that is led by a team that takes a principled stance against Gen AI and overall privacy violations.
I have no idea how willing or not you're able to work on web engine development again, but at the very least, you would be able to advise me about how to find people who can develop a new web engine.
Obviously, we keep this FOSS and probably license under GPL.
But I was thinking of a Kickstarter campaign and a donation page (donationware) on the project's website to generate funds for developers so they can afford to work on this.
There's probably a massive demand among people who know how dangerous Gen AI is for there to be a new web engine completely independent of Mozilla and Google, that takes a strong stance against LLM vomited code and Gen AI software features from the very start.

Reading through Anthropic's official repo for giving agents various "super skills"[1]... There's an "algorithmic art" skill and the instructions are explicitly encouraging pure deception as one of the key "critical guidelines":
"The philosophy MUST stress multiple times that the final algorithm should appear as though it took countless hours to develop, was refined with care, and comes from someone at the absolute top of their field. This framing is essential - repeat phrases like "meticulously crafted algorithm," "the product of deep computational expertise," "painstaking optimization," "master-level implementation.""
https://github.com/anthropics/skills/blob/main/skills/algorithmic-art/SKILL.md
For someone who's been working in this field for almost 30 years, this "skills.md" file is just the worst... and so far off the mark! 🤮
Touch some effing grass, Anthropic (and all boosters)! How can so many people think this approach is _the_ future? The map is not the terrain...
[1] Alone the premise of this repo is pure comedy gold and pure sadness in equal measures!

Dear Fedi friends,
I'd like to put together a list of people who are publicly resisting / calling out LLMs and AI slop.
Why? I enjoy reading my Fediverse feed in topical lists and I need something to counteract the unrelenting AI hype I see in the media.
Do you have any recommendations?
So far, at the top of my list I have:
@timnitGebru @emilymbender and @alexhanna of @DAIR
plus @cwebber @jaredwhite and @tante
Anyone else to recommend who advocates for #NoAI?
Yeah hot damn listening to these guys is a great reminder that I'm not alone in this #BetterOffline #NoAI
@_elena especially for the environment but also other aspects connected to that: @gerrymcgovern who also wrote this book: https://gerrymcgovern.com/books/99th-day/
The fact that browsing without built-in AI seems like such an innovative thing these days, should make us all think twice.
Keep exploring!

Seeing as my personal web server is constantly overloaded by AI crawlers, I'm now spinning up a honeypot based on https://rnsaffn.com/poison3/ as a supplementary service to the current infinite maze of garbage data. Plan is to pull several gigs of poisoned text from that poisoned well and serve as static files without any bandwidth restrictions. Let them eat cake.
For extra fun, I'm backdating all the files to the pre-LLM era to make them extra attractive.
It'll take several days to fill the honeypot, but that's okay, that's something that can run in the background.
@_elena @timnitGebru @emilymbender @alexhanna @DAIR @jaredwhite @tante I would clarify also that I am not quite #NoAI in terms of AI tech, but I am definitely opposed to the *AI industry* and this hype wave. There may be various useful things from this tech, but the net version of things with it being forced upon society right now in this hype wave is that everything is getting much worse, and sickeningly so.
Several more pieces need to be added to the puzzle to make "AI" tech more useful, and I'm also simply opposed to a direction in society that dismisses and devalues creative endeavors, which a lot of this hype is putting at the center of itself. Creativity is what makes life largely worthwhile. I'm not willing to give that up.
I have no problem with OpenImageDenoiser in Blender, which speeds up renders through machine learning, and in no way devalues creativity. But something which made it so I just typed a few words into Blender and it did all my artwork for me, I would oppose.
