#Microsoft locks account that #VeraCrypt maintainer uses to sign #Windows bootloaders with no explanation or route for appeal. If they don't fix this, in a few months every Windows computer that uses VeraCrypt whole-disk encryption will stop being able to boot and all the data on it that isn't backed up elsewhere will be lost. 🤦

The accusation is much scarier as it taps into corporate espionage and mass surveillance.
Microsoft is accused of illegally searching browser extension whenever a user sign in into LinkedIn. It scans for any signs of use of religious belief, political orientation, as well as disabilities of individuals. There is also the accusation of the data being handed over to Israeli spyware firm.
"This is illegal and potentially a criminal offense in every jurisdiction we have examined."
[This affects Chrome and Chromium browsers, which includes Vivaldi unfortunately. Notably, LinkedIn uses real names, and they are able to build quite a bit of info on you.]
Researchers have determined that Microsoft's LinkedIn is scanning browser plug-ins and other information without permission, building user profiles using data that the company did not get permission to take.

https://github.com/microsoft/WSL/issues/40072
English:
Warning: Running a full desktop environment in WSL is not a recommended configuration and may cause significant performance degradation.

The idea that Office 365 is compliant for use in any regulated space is *absolutely laughable*, but apparently the reason GCC High is approved for government use is because the government let agencies use it while they were evaluating it, and then realized so many agencies were now dependent on it, that they had to approve it even though it wasn't able to actually meet the security criteria.

I teach cybersecurity. And I genuinely don't know what to tell my students after this one. Federal reviewers spent years trying to get basic encryption documentation from Microsoft for its GCC High government cloud. They couldn't get it. One reviewer called the system a "pile of spaghetti pies," with data traveling from point A to point B the way you'd get from Chicago to New York: a bus to St. Louis, a ferry to Pittsburgh, and a flight to Newark. Each leg is a potential hijacking. They knew this. They said this out loud in writing. Then they approved it anyway in December 2024, because too many agencies were already using it. 🔐 That's not a security review. That's a hostage negotiation. Two things in this story should make every CISO and CIO uncomfortable:
🧩 Microsoft built its federal cloud on top of decades of legacy code that it apparently can't fully document itself
👮 "Digital escorts" often ex-military with minimal software engineering backgrounds are the firewall between Chinese engineers working on the system and classified U.S. networks 🤦🏻♂️
The scariest line in the whole ProPublica investigation isn't the "pile of shit" quote. It's this: FedRAMP determined that refusing authorization wasn't feasible because agencies were already using the product. Read that again. The security review process reached a conclusion based on sunk cost, not risk. Ex Post Facto Fallacy
If that logic holds, the compliance framework is just documentation theater. And right now, CISA is being hollowed out, so there are fewer people left to even run the theater.

Microsoft Xbox One Hacked
It’s an impress... https://www.schneier.com/blog/archives/2026/03/microsoft-xbox-hacked.html
"For years, reviewers said, Microsoft had tried and failed to fully explain how it protects sensitive information in the cloud as it hops from server to server across the digital terrain. Given that and other unknowns, government experts couldn’t vouch for the technology’s security.
Such judgments would be damning for any company seeking to sell its wares to the U.S. government, but it should have been particularly devastating for Microsoft. The tech giant’s products had been at the heart of two major cybersecurity attacks against the U.S. in three years. In one, Russian hackers exploited a weakness to steal sensitive data from a number of federal agencies, including the National Nuclear Security Administration. In the other, Chinese hackers infiltrated the email accounts of a Cabinet member and other senior government officials.
The federal government could be further exposed if it couldn’t verify the cybersecurity of Microsoft’s Government Community Cloud High, a suite of cloud-based services intended to safeguard some of the nation’s most sensitive information.
Yet, in a highly unusual move that still reverberates across Washington, the Federal Risk and Authorization Management Program, or FedRAMP, authorized the product anyway, bestowing what amounts to the federal government’s cybersecurity seal of approval. FedRAMP’s ruling — which included a kind of “buyer beware” notice to any federal agency considering GCC High — helped Microsoft expand a government business empire worth billions of dollars."

Did you notice how it is always the user's fault when #Microsoft can't do anything right?
"You are using an outdated version of Teams. Please download and install..."
It's not me. It's you who can't implement self-updates for #Teams for years!
When there is a 2FA, and the only way the user has is an SMS, and the SMS is not working, because it is not working most of the time, there is a button labeled: "I can't receive it right now". I can! It's you who failed to deliver it again!

Now you don’t have to worry about your digital files being lost on an old hard drive. Microsoft Research has taken Project Silica out of the lab and turned it into a real system that uses regular glass. They use special lasers to write data into borosilicate glass, creating a storage medium that can last for 10,000 years. This is more than just an experiment; they’ve already stored 4.8 terabytes on a piece of glass about the size of a drink coaster.
What’s most impressive is how tough this storage is. You could put these glass slabs in boiling water or even a microwave, and the data would still be safe. Because glass doesn’t need power to keep the data intact, it’s possible to create huge archives that don’t use any electricity for cooling or upkeep. This could mean the end of the Digital Dark Age.
🧠 One glass slab holds 4.8 terabytes of permanent data.
⚡ Lasers etch 301 layers of data into 2mm of glass.
🎓 Borosilicate glass reduces the cost of archival storage.
🔍 Accelerated aging tests prove the data lasts 10 millennia.

@FuturisticRobert @fuchsiii I think that's the fundamental unfixable problem of publicly traded corporations because they are legally mandated to maximize ROI for shareholders at an exponential rate they'll inevitably hit a ceiling.
Per contrast, #Valve (which is owned predominantly by #GabeN and only has marginal amounts of (non-traded!) stocks with it's employees) is also doing great without #enshittifiying #Steam.
Which makes Gaben propably the only publicly known #billionaire that isn't hated.

These aren’t AI firms, they’re defense contractors. We can’t let them hide behind their models.

Companies like #Palantir, #Google, #Amazon, #Microsoft, #Anduril, and #OpenAI are implicated, with their AI systems integrated into military operations, blurring the lines between commercial technology and lethal weaponry. The existing international humanitarian law framework, designed for human decision-making, is unable to accommodate AI warfare, where accountability is diffused and reasoning is opaque.

Verifying yourself on #LinkedIn?
Congratulations! "I handed a US company (Persona) my passport, my face, and the mathematical geometry of my skull. They cross-referenced me against credit agencies and government databases. They’ll use my documents to train their AI. And if the US government comes knocking, they’ll hand it all over"
Also, #Persona shares that data with #Anthropic, #OpenAI, #Amazon, #Google, and of course #Microsoft (that owns LinkedIn)
