I'm with ya! I am a strong advocate for the used #thinkpad market - incredible #Linux (and #bsd?) machines for any budget $50 or bigger.
I'm running a radio station server (backup) on a 2006 thinkpad. It just always works. Insane.
Do people know about this?
I know there are a lot of Linux users here and I hear both the pros and cons about it pretty frequently even when I'm not trying to, but I'm baffled to realise nobody has ever mentioned the single best thing about Linux: One Drive doesn't beg to be used and filled every chance it gets
If an operating system is required to implement age verification but does not or cannot, it would be illegal.
People have been arguing that our elected officials do not know how Linux or BSD works. I believe they know exactly how these systems work, and they do not like them because they cannot control, police, or monitor them. Therefore, they want operating systems such as Microsoft Windows, Apple macOS, Apple iOS, and the soon-to-be locked-down Google Android to be our only choices.
The whole point of this law is to make Linux and BSD — operating systems they have no power over — illegal.
The Discover app looks quite promising. However, when I click to install an app from the apps.kde.org website, it opens the Discover app but I get this error:
"could not open appstream://org.kde.discover.desktop because it was not found in any available software repositories"
I am not sure how to add the KDE apps website to the Discover repositories.
Is this a common error? Or do you think it is Debian or Devuan specific error? I haven't yet tried on my Artix Linux installation, as that is currently in a different location.

"How it all began"
I saw an ad for this CD set at a very low price in a computer magazine. I decided to give it a try, enticed by the low cost and this 'alternative solution to Windows', and in late 1996 I ordered this set.
When it arrived, I was fascinated (having never used a Unix or Unix-like system before) but a bit daunted by the lack of support for the main applications I knew. A few months later, though, I decided to give it another go and from that point, I never looked back. Whether it was Linux, one of the BSDs, or something similar (but Unix or Unix-like), I was not going back to systems like Windows.
My #ThrowbackThursday today is probably one of the most significant in my computing life.

I've been thinking a lot about how we should talk about generative AI recently and here's something I realized; focusing on the ethics of generative AI (or lack thereof) is a waste if you're not also mentioning the practical issues, ESPECIALLY the fact that legally speaking LLM code inherently makes all software licenses unenforceable because only humans can own copyright. If you're wondering why that's important, I've seen enough people have absurd breakdowns over people daring to make package scripts for, say, the AUR to realize that a lot of talented programmers are also extreme control freaks. So it might be worthwhile to mention that LLM generated output is uncopyrightable.
Amazing how we keep learning interesting tidbits. The writers of the XFce docs have made wonderfull documentation that are always online.
I've never read them, because of my autodicatical skills. Until today, when I accidentally pressed F1 and my browser popped up, showing me the help page of the xfce terminal, of which I have read the manpages.
So this key is programmed in the terminal, not in the DM. Lovely to know this exists

We started with an older laptop. We had Linux Mint on a USB drive, and managed to boot from it.
So we did that, and then selected:

Then powered down (which was interesting, and there's another question there) ...
... removed the USB drive, and prepared to power up into the newly installed OS.

And we got the message:
No bootable medium found.

OK, so I guess we put the USB drive back in, and try again.

I've just put out a Linux forensics scenario for you all to play around with. There's a contest. You r submissions are due by 2026-04-15 23:59 UTC.
On Friday I announced a DFIR challenge around a recently drafted Linux forensics scenario. This garnered a lot of interest and even a couple of submissions over the weekend.
After chatting with one potential entrant, I realized to my horror that I had uploaded an incorrect version of the scenario data. I replaced the incorrect version Sunday evening and updated the original blog post. But if you grabbed the scenario data before the change, you don't have everything I intended you to have.
The revised version contains a full memory dump from the system. And note that while the general outline of the scenario remains unchanged, the revised version will have different timestamps for some of the activity.
So grab the revised version and have at it! Thanks for your patience and I hope you enjoy working on it!
Linux tip: Use the “setgid” mode bit on shared directories: “chmod g+s /shared/project”. New files will inherit group ownership, which prevents permission chaos between users.

🦀 Redox OS — the Rust microkernel OS — has banned all AI/LLM-generated contributions.
Their reasoning:
❌ LLMs produce code that "looks correct" but hides subtle bugs
❌ No chain of accountability for AI-written system code
❌ Legal risk from training data copyright
❌ Erosion of contributor understanding
For OS-level code, this position makes sense. Every line of kernel code has a human who understands it.

#Cat story:
Some months back, using a rescued e-waste laptop as a ham radio computer.
Running Debian #Linux, it sat on my office desk, with a tiny QDX digital radio on USB, squeaking out tiny 4 Watt QRP #JS8 signals into antenna coax.
JS8 is low speed chat mode, with relaying and stored messages, right? I would let it run all day, then check it once or twice a day, message scattered ops.
Well... One day I get WTF email saying,
"Dood, U Ok? You been sending nonsense last hour!"
Oh no!
I'm at work, reading that ham's email about my QRM, on my phone.
Quickly call my spouse.
"Are you working in the home office? Ok. Is Kitty Fooble is next to you? Is he sitting on my laptop keyboard? Ah-ha! That's it!"
Then I explained.
"OMG! My fault, I left laptop keyboard exposed. Our cat is butt-typing the ionosphere via JS8! Hams everywhere complaining! Flip power switch! Unplug this and that!"
Ha ha ha!
Silly me.
Hey, so now you have a story with

2. They won't do down-payments (start for free).
3. They want complete copyright ownership of code from day one and she works on their org's github pushing code (IP ownership before payment).
4. They quoted her last year's currency conversion rates when she said USD.
5. They won't allow her to showcase the final public facing website on her portfolio.
6. No deemed acceptance clause.

"My friends are tired of Windows, and want to learn Linux. Can we set them up?"
So, loading laptops last night, getting them ready for new homes.
Go, kids, go!
The guest can use an Ethernet connection when I turn on "Realtek USB 10/100/1000 LAN" in the "Devices & Shares" preferences tab. At that point the host switches to WiFi. And I can tether the guest to my phone using Bluetooth when I turn on "Intel Corp. AX210 Bluetooth". At that point I can't use any Bluetooth devices on the host.
I've just moved a number of large files that I do not use often from an active partition to a backup partition.
What is odd is that the access speed to the active partition has increased significantly. Since that should not be possible, that must have to do with the manner in which the active partition is accessed by the Android operating system. Some research required.

The Document Foundation expelled 30+ LibreOffice developers, many from Collabora Productivity, citing unclear legal conflicts despite major code contributions. ⚖️
Collabora plans a fork, raising risks to stability and governance transparency, as FOSS sustainability and user control depend on open stewardship. 🔐

So... My plan to build a Linux laptop for my mom didn't go exactly as I hoped, BUT: my mom is using Linux, and she's very happy with it! 😄
I had an elaborate plan prepared to install Debian root on ZFS, setup remote access, automated snapshots, remote backups, etc. See my two previous polls for the idea; thanks again for your valuable help! It did give me a lot of ideas, and also made me realise that it's okay not to have the "perfect" setup right away.
On install day, a few things happened: a) I wasn't having the best day (thanks long covid!), b) the drive configuration was less ideal than I had hoped (dual boot with Windows on same drive, instead of separate disks), c) there was more data and programs to configure than anticipated, and I had some trouble there as well. d) of course, I had to explain how it works as well.
Basically, I ran out of time and energy.
So I went with plain ext4 in the end, but was able to configure a functional setup for her at least. All in all, not too bad. If she continues to love it, I can always make small (or big; perhaps FreeBSD is ready next year?) tweaks in the future.
But the key takeaway: my mom is a proud Linux user now!! 🎉
I’m thinking of switching away from Debian because of all the systemd AI garbage code. Are there any good alternative distributions that don't rely on systemd and aren't full of AI code? The only things that matter to me are that I can still use X11 and i3wm.
Maybe void Linux and runit are an option. I have to look into that.
edit: fixed typo

One thing I’m learning in a non-systemd distro: you have to be the architect of your own service tree. Using Dinit on Artix means if an app (like Mullvad) can't find its daemon, you just gotta check the waits-for dependencies. Sometimes it's a simple pacman -S, other times it’s a quick edit to a service file. It’s more manual, but it is worth it.

jq is super useful, once somebody explains the basics to you. Here I am explaining the basics in a way that's applicable for all you DFIR types.
Seit mehr als 6 Monaten habe ich Schritt für Schritt mein Desktop Ökosystem von Windows nach Linux getauscht.
Mein Fazit. Manches ist (war) ungewohnt, vieles ist besser.
Arbeiten geht schneller, kein Online-Login, keine Werbung, kein wir wollen dich kennenlernen 🤮, keine Lizenzkosten, Tools oder Alternativen laufen problemlos, weniger kognitive Dissonanz, etc.
Richtig gut, bin superhappy damit. 😀

I'm on CachyOS #Linux using Gnome.
If I would like to look into window tiling, what are my options?
I'm thinking mostly two windows same size on the screen or split 2/3 and 1/3. Nothing too fanzy, but it would be nice to speed up this workflow somehow.
My current plan is to test: https://extensions.gnome.org/extension/7065/tiling-shell/
I have been interested in Linux distros without SystemD for quite a while. Been using Devuan on a few systems for quite a few years, so has my oldest son.
Trying Artix Linux again and really liking it. Truth is that I haven't yet spent significant time with it, though.
( #NixOS #KDE #Linux ) In the past week I saw faster downloads when I disconnect from wifi and only use ethernet.
I dug into the KDE networking settings, there's a connection priority for each Wi-Fi and Wired connection. Does that affect traffic priority? I'd rather have some background process that switches interface priority to the one with the lowest latency.
Is that a thing I can do in Linux?
I was an Ubuntu fanboy for nearly 15 years, so most of my Linux experience has been with GTK based programs and desktop environments (typing this from a Cinnamon desktop now, as it is the DE on my laptop along with the i3 window manager).
Possible big step: Yesterday I installed Artix Linux with the latest KDE Plasma desktop environment on a computer for family room use (mostly videos and music).
My children have been using Krita for art and Kdenlive for video editing for years.

@mjdxp This is perhaps a bit of problem to post if not true. Can we please get some clarification about #LibreOffice which is the main reason people are OK with using #linux and rumours of its demise might not be fair and disproportionately destructive. #FactCheck
I had not noticed that there was a new edition of "The Linux Command Line" until today.
If you use Linux, and perhaps especially if you are new to Linux, and want to get to grips with command line / terminal usage, it is well worth dipping into this free (CC BY-NC-ND) tome:

Successfully migrated the login to my Forgejo Git-Forge from an outdated installation of Authentik to a containerized Keycloak 26 with Passkey (WebAuthN) authentication 🥳
Getting the users from my FreeIPA LDAP via a secured Wireguard tunnel that only allows port 636 to my IPA replica server in my DMZ.
Works like a charm. Once the handful of users on my instance have linked their new Keycloak identity with their Forgejo account, I can disable the old OIDC with Authentik 🙂

PH4NTXM — Published Material
We’ve started publishing material from the system, including:
– screenshots of core functionality
– network fingerprinting validation (p0f)
– browser fingerprint leak checks (browserleaks)
No claims — just observable output.
You can find everything here:
https://github.com/PH4NTXMOFFICIAL/PH4NTXM/tree/main/docs/images
This is where we’ll keep uploading:
• system behavior in real conditions
• identity variance across sessions
• fingerprint drift evidence
• additional proof as the project evolves
If you're into OPSEC, anti-fingerprinting, or adversarial environments, take a look.
More coming...

Linux sysadmin question (since it's no longer possible to find actual answers via search on the Internet):
How can I configure the PATH to *always* have a specific directory in it when a shell (Bash) is started, regardless of whether the shell is login/non-login, interactive/non-interactive, etc.?
The normal steps (adding a file in /etc/profile.d which adds to the path) work for login/interactive shells, but not for shells opened by sshd with a command to execute (no pty).

Well fuck. Remember when I said I was going to be deploying a #Linux desktop for my mom's church's office? (My mother is the church secretary).
Yeah, that can't happen, because they use a proprietary church management software that is Windows based. Linux clients exist, but only for RHEL, SuSE Enterprise, CentOS, and Ubuntu. They state the packages will not work on other distros. The church will never pay for RedHat nor SuSE, CentOS is fucking shite, and Ubuntu is beyond shite. Even if I can get it working in another distro, the minute they have an issue, the vendor will stonewall the minute they see an unsupported configuration.
So I get to support a fucking Windows 11 machine.
I haven't touched a Windows computer in close to a year. This is gonna be fun on the bun.
