Who made the decision for the #US to attack #Iran—the American president, or a foreign country off in the shadows pulling the strings?
It’s understandable why many people think the US/ #Israel war against Iran is a bad idea. Some say it violates the #UN Charter. Others think it is unnecessary for the United States to do this since Iran wasn’t directly threatening the United States, or that even if Iran’s nuclear program was potentially a threat, negotiations could have achieved an equal or better outcome. Those are certainly reasonable views.
But before jumping to conspiracy, remember who actually made the decision to send the US into this war: Donald #Trump. And there’s no question that in his mind, he is one hundred percent certain that this war is necessary to defend the United States.
Claims that #Jews or Israel are somehow pulling the strings and manipulating the US into the Iran war don’t arise in a vacuum. They mirror longstanding patterns of antisemitism, in which Jews are portrayed as wielding hidden power, manipulating governments, and acting with dual loyalties.

For non-native English speakers, it's a reference to the game of poker. A "straight" in poker is five cards of different suits all in consecutive numerical order. It's a tough hand to beat, as is holding the Strait of Hormuz. A pair of cards is the lowest hand; here, Trump doesn't even have a pair, reflecting his weak position. It's also a crude pun meaning he doesn't have testicles.

The ceasefire deal between the USA and Iran has two obvious fault lines that will most likely cause it to fail:
- Who gets how much protection money from the ships passing through the Street of Hormuz? Trumps greed will kick in once someone else gets money.
- Israel is refusing the ceasefire for the Lebanon. Furthermore Israel is no official party of the agreement which historically means that they will drop the occasional bomb here and there. But most important: They (and especially Netanyahu) have no interest in the ceasefire holding up.
I see other possible breaking points, but that are the big ones.

Beirut was my home for almost 4 years when I was studying urban planning at the American University of Beirut, and I have a lot of loved ones in the city.

A friend sent me a video of a building that was struck by an Israeli missile. It was less than 100m away from my apartment on the waterfront, and maybe 200m from the AUB campus. Two friends lived in the building adjacent to that building that now is mostly rubble. I couldn't get to them, but I heard through other friends that they're ok.
The rubble from the terror strike is piled on the street, burying cars under it, blocking the street that I walked every day to get to campus.
