It appears one or more impersonators have already registered some of the applications that I maintained, including @appmanager. I've reported this to , but not sure what's going to happen. The Android developer verification is still in beta, and it doesn't have a lot of features now to deal with this kind of problems.

Ages ago, with my Android 4 phone, transferring files from the phone to my Linux box was super comfortable: You could mount the phone’s storage over Bluetooth / ObexFTP and then you could use common tools like find, rsync, rm. So, I had a script that grabbed all new photos and stuff and put them in their correct place on my PC.

All of this fell out of fashion and even the ObexFTP project is pretty much dead now.

So: How do I accomplish something similar today with Android 14?

      In particular:

      • No cloud stuff. I don’t even want to connect the phone to my WiFi.
      • Must be scriptable. I just want to put the phone near me and then run the script on my Linux box. I don’t want to touch and swipe and do shit on the phone.
      • Ideally, I don’t want to install any 3rd party apps, but meh, if there’s no other way, I’ll bite the bullet …

Is such a thing even possible anymore?

      – edit: Using MTP mounts over USB for now. That was easy to set up and already a huge improvement. Still looking into Bluetooth stuff.

@GrapheneOS I would switch to grapheneOS if I could use it on fairphone because I believe in an absolute right to privacy its not just for abusers. I'm not going to get a phone other than the fairphone because it's more important to me that there is no slavery and conflict minerals used in the phone and the modularity is a nice plus too. So unless grapheneOS supports a phone that has these features I can't ethically justify buying a phone without them just to use it.

I am reading more about Free / open source alternatives to Google's Play Integrity tooling, sometimes called "attestation".

It is the ability for an app developer to set guidelines, which dictate whether an app can run on a user's computer or not.

The more I read, the more important I feel it is for users to be in control.

A user must be able to choose whether or not to follow an attestation guideline or not.

Simply making attestation open source, without giving user's choice and control over what they can run on their computer, is insufficient.

I've just moved a number of large files that I do not use often from an active partition to a backup partition.

What is odd is that the access speed to the active partition has increased significantly. Since that should not be possible, that must have to do with the manner in which the active partition is accessed by the Android operating system. Some research required.

Getting rather frustrated that the latest Android strips location EXIF from the web file picker.

Doesn't seem to be any workaround that'll let you pick a photo and have a web browser see the geolocation.

Like, I get the privacy issues, but it is rather frustrating for location-based web apps.

GrapheneOS started in 2014 and was originally named CopperheadOS. In late 2015, the Copperhead company was founded which was meant to support the project. Copperhead didn't create CopperheadOS and didn't own or control it. Copperhead made a failed takeover attempt on it in 2018.

There are at least a dozen people spending at least several hours attacking GrapheneOS across platforms on a daily basis.

We all know that the new “verification process” amounts basically to a ransom where you need to give Google your keys and your money if you want to build apps for Android.

It involves developers handing their signing keys to Google (so they will sign your package for you and will also able to decrypt your secrets) and paying them a $25 fee for each app.

Even if you don’t even use the Play Store to distribute your apps.

This is not a price to pay to get the app distributed through them, nor for using any of their services. It’s a price to pay just because they want to control the whole ecosystem end-to-end, and they know that they can get away with that because you’ll keep using their shitty OS even if you’re outraged at them.

We all know that they got a lot of backlash. And after the backlash they reiterated that they “listened to the community” and would have made a process to still allow people to “sideload apps”.

Well, today that process has been finally unveiled. And it sounds even shittier than I thought.

That’s because Google is currently filled with the best professional enshittificators in the world: the job role of these people is not to build new things, nor to listen to customers and build what they want. No, their job is specifically to find the sweet spot where they can make things as shitty as possible, add as much friction and user frustration as possible to prevent them from doing a certain thing, while still being able to tell regulators “well, it’s not that shitty, you see? We still give users an option - buried under 10 layers of dark patterns”.

In order to install apps external to the Play Store you will have to:

One is the migration of Signal.
Sadly a migration including the message history is not simple if it is possible at all.
I really wonder what technical (?) reason prevents this? Is incompatibly local encryption? To risky file transfer? (and yes, I understand, if you enable the migration of messages to a different phone it would enable someone with temporary physical access to extract all your messages. The prevention of this is IMHO the reason that you are only allowed to use Signal on one phone)

                                                                                                                      I have no idea.

Even if you have Signal Desktop in use it doesn't help 😞 (that would actually be a path, if I somehow could load the messages in the new Signal on Android installation)

It re-enabled Wi-Fi calling as the preferred call method. The problem is that inside my own house there are places where the Wi-Fi signal isn't all that great, especially if a door is closed, but the cellular call quality is fine. So I only turn on Wi-Fi calling when I'm somewhere with sub-par cell service.
