I'm an AFOL and prefer all kinds of LEGO sets.

My favorite themes ever are Western, Indiana Jones, some City sets and especially the Modular sets. I like sets which have realistic, more authentic-looking and minifig-sized buildings/vehicles like Indiana Jones and again modular sets. This because I'm building a Lego city which has an accent on 1930-1960 style.
I have many sets though from many themes but it was the modular series (starting from Cafe corner) which got me out of my slightly darker ages.

My favorite sets ever:
Pizza to go (setnr:6350) --> it's just so simple and elegant, great playing fun
Gold city junction (setnr:6765) --> a set that defines a really good LEGO-set: many details, original theme, great playing possibilities and in the end just the LEGO-magic.
Cafe corner (setnr:10182:)--> It's a thing of beauty and the interior is empty which means there's a lot of potential to make something pretty of it from the inside
