Robert Gillespie James is a federal judge on senior status with the United States District Court for the Western District of Louisiana. He joined the court in 1998 after being nominated by President Bill Clinton. James served as chief judge of the court from 2009 to 2012. He assumed senior status on May 31, 2016.[1]

Early life and education

Born in Ruston, Louisiana, James earned his bachelor's degree from Louisiana Tech University in 1968, and his J.D. from Louisiana State University Law School in 1971.[1]

James was nominated to the United States District Court for the Western District of Louisiana by Bill Clinton on January 27, 1998, to a seat vacated by John M. Shaw. The American Bar Association rated James Unanimously Qualified for the nomination.[2] Hearings on James' nomination were held before the United States Senate Committee on the Judiciary on June 18, 1998, and his nomination was reported by U.S. Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-Utah) on June 25, 1998. James was confirmed on a voice vote of the U.S. Senate on July 31, 1998, and he received his commission on August 3, 1998. James served as chief judge of the court from 2009 to 2012. He assumed senior status on May 31, 2016.[1][3]
