Keirien Taylor participated in Ballotpedia's candidate survey on July 11, 2018. The survey questions appear in bold, and Keirien Taylor's responses follow below.[1]
What would be your top three priorities, if elected?
| “ | MY TOP THREE PRIORITIES:
1. Single Payer HealthCare |
” |
What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about? Why?
| “ | There are several areas of public policy that I am personally passionate about. The area of public policy that I am most passionate about is social justice and police reform. As a minority, I believe strongly in true equality amongst all races, religions, and genders. Equality and justice are the essences of our nation’s democracy, I will continue to fight to ensure that our nation upholds these standards and treats everyone equally and justly. I am also passionate about police reform, as it ties deeply with my stance on equality and justice. We cannot have equal protection of the law without equal enforcement of the law. Police need to be held accountable for their actions, and trained properly to ensure that the killing of unarmed black people ceases! I am also passionate about the student debt crisis. As a current graduate student and a recent undergrad graduate, I have amounted a lot of student debt throughout my educational tenure just to increase my prospects of receiving a decent job. Relying heavily on financial aid and students loans as my means of payment, I have amount a debt that will take possibly decades to pay. Students should not have to live of life in debt just to obtain a degree, which is becoming the status-quo to be competitive in the work force. |

Ballotpedia also asked the candidate a series of optional questions. Keirien Taylor answered the following:
Who do you look up to? Whose example would you like to follow and why?
| “ | Several people that I look up to are President Obama, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Oprah, Bernie Sanders, Elizabeth Warren, Malala Yousafzai, and Naomi Wadler. If I had to select whom I would like to follow as an example, I would choose President Obama (or the whole Obama family). President Obama made history and changed America for the better, although I am critical of some of his decisions, President Obama gave me great hope for the future. Upon entering the White House, President Obama and his family were under strict scrutiny. While under such a close microscope the President and his family acted in a manner that was honorable and showed master class and dignity. The Obamas faced relentless bile (a lot of it racially fueled), despite such hate the President and the family maintained impeccable poise. |
” |
| “ | The Marx-Engels Reader - Robert C. Tucker Noam Chomsky has been very influential on my political thought. |
” |
| “ | It is important for elected officials to have the following characteristics: Integrity, Honesty, Transparency, Intelligence, Open Mind, Morality, Empathy, Passion, Patience, and Loyalty.[3] | ” |
| “ | I believe that I possess several qualities that would make me a successful officeholder. Those qualities include thoughtfulness, honesty, integrity, open mind, empathy, patience, and passion…. The list could go on. For me, my biggest thing is listening. A lot can be learned through listening and once you have listened then you engage the issue with the other qualities.[3] |
” |
| “ | The core responsibility for a representative, is to represent the people and fight relentlessly for your constituents regardless of “office politics”.[3] | ” |
| “ | When it is all said and done I would like to change the world for the better, at least in some capacity.[3] | ” |
| “ | The first historical event that happened in my lifetime is the inauguration of President Obama in 2008. I was 12 years old at the time and was watching the inauguration in history class at Lockerman Middle School located in Denton, MD. I can remember everything during that event, including where I sat and oddly what my teacher was wearing. I would of said Hurricane Katrina as my first, but I don’t have a vivid memory of it that I can pinpoint to.[3] | ” |
| “ | My very first job was a dishwasher that a local country club. Many of my friends lived near the country club, and received jobs there, so it was pretty fitting that I worked there too. I only had it for the summer.[3] | ” |
| “ | My most favorite holiday is Thanksgiving, because I love to eat.[3] | ” |
| “ | If I could be a fictional character, then I would be Aang the Last Airbender from the anime TV show. Mostly because it would be pretty cool to control the elements and fight bad guys.[3] | ” |
| “ | My favorite thing in my apartment is my dog, Twinkie. Twinkie is a crazy Pomeranian Dotson mix that always loves to play, fight, and go on adventures. She’s my little girl.[3] | ” |
| “ | I will call for legislation that would create a non-partisan commission to draw district maps. As a believer in democracy our district lines should be drawn in the best way to represent the people.[3] | ” |
| “ | Right now, a current legislator that I would like to model myself after is Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. The campaign she is running in your is truly inspiring. Ocasio-Cortez’s ran a grassroots campaign focused on real people issues and beat a 20 year establishment democrat. If that isn’t awesome, then I don’t know what is.[3] | ” |
| “ | Yes, in the future I would like to run for U.S. Congress.[3] | ” |
