The Need for Speed Challenge > a half-assed review -- Need for Speed III - Hot Pursuit (1998)

There’s this millenium-old saying: “If nothing works, use a ThinkPad”. And here we are now. Unfortunately, I’m going through laptops faster than I’d wish and I didn’t even play one single game. While it is bad and unfortunate, I guess it’ll do. This IBM is still going strong, but it runs Windows XP which might be an issue for the first iteration of Need for Speed. Also the hard drive seems to be particularly crunchy, which is either sign of approaching failure, or it’s just crunchy and I’ve forgotten the sound of it lately.

This is another guest post. In case you don’t know what that means, a guest post is something written by someone else, but published by me. It represents their views, not mine, I just considered it’s a piece worth publishing written by someone who doesn’t have a presence online.
However, I did contribute to this article with the cover photo.
There is a quiet pattern in the retro computing world.

”The Estonian language is thousands of years old, we have been in the same geographical spot for over 5000 years with no business of invading others. We had our own wars within the country with ourselves. Our language has weird parts - we have past forms, present forms but no future. We can’t say anything in the future .”

This is the first retro-game I’ve played. I discovered it in an internet cafe that had less powered computers, back in 2003. While NFS II was only six year old at the time, comparing it to the then-current NFS Underground really made it look dated.
The Special Edition released in the following year includes six new cars (FZR 2000 and Tombstone NASCAR among them), new tracks, and 3dfx Glide video support.

Series Intro Because I have a lot of time on my hands (I do not), I’ve decided it’s a good thing to start playing all the Need For Speed titles in 2026 and see how they hold up in this millennium. This was supposed to be a bigger post at some time, but I decided to publish it as a series, with a full round-up post at the end of the series.

This is the first of many guest posts that I will host (except the Lost and Found section of the site). In case you don’t know what that means, a guest post is something written by someone else, but published by me. It represents their views, not mine, I just considered it’s a piece worth publishing written by someone who doesn’t have a presence online.

Museums along the Road

I wrote an article called Exit through the gift shop > The fine line between culture and ostentation for this month’s IndieWeb carnival, hosted by James (capjamesg), where the theme was “Museum memories”.
But before I wrote that, I was actually writing a list of museums that I’ve seen in my travels and moving around Europe, article which I abandoned when I made that. I took some hours to research, complete and polish it off, but I’d like you to excuse the briefness and the quality of the photos in some cases, many of these places were visited over ten, even fifteen years ago.

James (capjamesg) is hosting this month’s IndieWeb carnival, and the theme is “Museum memories”. Thank you James for hosting!
I wanted to write an article about some of the best and greatest museums that I’ve visited over the last 15 years, but at the middle of the article I got reminded that I actually have a big issue with museums, especially those art museums. I’ll probably power up and finish the initial article, because I think it has some potential, but I don’t know when.
