Scratch is a genre-fluid compilation album spotlighting a selection of UK-based artists, brought together around the layered and often unseen processes of sampling and transmission. At its core are words by artist Scarlet Griffiths, drawn from her book Scratch and recorded in her own voice-then passed on to musicians as raw material.
Artists were told to respond to the words in an organic way, not so much let the words guide them but more use them as material matter, sound and stimulus.
Rather than direct instruction or narrative cues, these voice recordings served as sonic matter; fragments to be absorbed, reprocessed, and woven into each track. In some pieces, the words form the skeleton of the music; in others, they flicker subtly between textures, hidden like half-remembered phrases or ghost samples.
The album reveals the hidden transfer points between sound and print, voice, text and track.
Just as Griffiths’s photographic work involves scratching through the surface of printed images to uncover what lies beneath, here the voice is cut, stretched, and embedded within new forms - carried forward by each artist into something tactile.
The result is a low flung searching compilation that, like the visual work it parallels, embraces blur, bleed, and veiled traces.
