Blog discription

What will you find here? Ramblings from an aging gamer-miniature painter. When I first started out in this hobby computers were in their infancy and finding other gamers could only be done by going to conventions or as in my case bumping into somebody who happened to see me reading "Panzer Leader" on the school bus. Look how far we have come! The internet has allowed our small community to be able to connect on a level I never dreamed of when I was but a small lad. What I do hope you will find here is something interesting from one wargamer/miniature painter to another. I paint miniatures somewhat decently, so I will be posting some pictures of my work, and perhaps a review or two of games and/or miniatures. Most of all this is just about having fun and anything I post here is meant to be for that reason.

Age of Chivalry: Condottieri Army Italian Crossbowmen

Another group of dudes done for a friends Condottieri Saga Army. Just a few more to go and I will have the project completed.

Here are 18 crossbowmen. With all the assorted dress and no uniforms per say for the period it was hard to come up with a color scheme. So I decided I would break them up into three 6 man color groups and add some variation within each color group to make it appealing yet not drive me crazy trying to paint umpteen colors.

I think I succeeded. Now he will be able to break them up into 6 man units, or combine the different groups to make a nice looking 12 man unit.

Age of Chivalry: Condottieri Army Italian Knights and Warlord

So my friend had me paint up these Mirliton figures from Italy. His horse choices made it hard for me to make color decisions. As I was looking through historical drawings and such I discovered that it wasn't uncommon for this period to paint their armor. At least I was able to give some color to them since it's supposed to be the early Italian War period just before everyone went gonzo on fancy ribbons and slashed clothing. Lastly I do not have a steady enough hand to be able to paint fanciful designs on the armor but I managed it a bit on the flag. Hopefully the color choices I used on the horses barding will draw the eye enough.

So here is my interpretation of that time.

Age of Saga: Ordensstaat Warlord

I've had this vinyl figure from Fire Forge for a bit and just finished painting it up today. I have a foot Warlord for the army and played a game with them last week and I needed a more mobile warlord, so I got off my butt and knocked him out.

I've also decided to add a few more foot troops to the army as well, but that's something for another day.

Age of Alexander: Macedonian "Peltasts"

FINALLY! I have finished the last of the Macedonians for a friends army. If said friend wants to add to this army he will have to contract it out to a far away place across the ocean.

Well that said here they are in all their splendid glory.

Age of Alexander: Alexander himself!

Another unit done for a friends Macedonians. Alexander, not painted like the later European artists often depicted Alexander with blond hair, likely due to cultural symbolism associating blondness with virtue and heroism, instead with reddish brown hair. Also I have forgone all that purple silliness and went with more natural colors for uniforms.

Age of Hannibal: Greek Mercenaries

So I decided to paint up some mercenaries for my Carthaginian Army and I painted up the most expensive, totally cool one that I could pick out. The Greek Mercenaries. A formidable force as they are considered Hearth guard, have determination (basically get a free activation without spending command dice), can close ranks and add +1 to their saving die rolls, but if they charge they only have an aggression of 1 instead of 2 (which means charging them will be insane), and finally because of their well kitted out equipment they are armor value 6 against shooting.

They ended up being a total bust being included in the army because mercenaries can't use the advance Saga abilities, and the cost of 2 points keeps you from getting that extra unit you need for this army.

BUT THEY WERE SO COOL!!!! Everyone who knows me the rule of cool is what I live by, win or lose.

Macedonian Elephant

I painted this for a friend as a commission for his Age of Alexander army for Saga. The model is from Wargames Foundry. It's an older figure line from them and is a metal model. I was not a huge fan of this model. It was metal parts that had to be glued together and it was clunky and had many gaps that I had to fill with green stuff. It was probably the top of the line for it's day but it hasn't aged well. I normally place my figures on thick paint sticks using blue stuff, but this model was to heavy for that so it was harder to paint.

But I trudged on and finally got it done. Here are the results.
