Izanagi and Izanami is a Japanese myth similar to Orpheus and Eurydice. When Izanami dies while giving birth, she is sent to the Underworld. Izanagi descends to the Underworld and is warned by his wife not to look at her. However much like Orpheus, his desires overcome him and he disregards all instruction. His wife is then forbidden to leave the Underworld due to husband’s misdoing. Sounds a lot like Orpheus and Eurydice, doesn’t it? Komainu, also known as lion-dogs, are mythical lion-like creatures commonly found in Japanese Shinto shrines. (Shinto is a Japanese indigenous religious practice centered on the worship of kami, spirits associated with natural elements and ancestral beings.)
