Back in 1954, while attending International Congress of Mathematics in Amsterdam, Roger Penrose went to see exposition of M.C. Escher's work and being "absolutely spellbound by his work" he decided to make something impossible himself. Penrose triangle and article about this impossible object were published 1958 in British Journal of Psychology. At this time Penrose knew nothing about Oscar Reutesvärd's earlier work.
