One of my paintings of the Germanic gods and goddesses. This is Sif, the wife of the Norse thundergod Thor. Her name means 'relative' and she acts as a peaceweaver between the gods. The rowan has strong associations with Thor and is known as 'Thor's Salvation' as a rowan tree saved him from drowning on his journey to Geirrod's Hall. The rowan is also sacred to Thor's wife in Saami mythology.

Urd is one of the three Norns (goddess of Fate) in Heathen mythology. She is shown here standing beside the well which bears her name which lies beneath the world tree. For more information of on the symbolism see the notes on the image.
