Coronation Street | 5th January 2025 opening sequence (Lisa & Becky (& Carla) strand)
If you want to learn more about the filmmaking for this episode and Corriedale to understand why and how they looked so different to usual episodes, I really recommend reading this post by @jmflowers which goes into some of the technological differences that were employed on this shooting block.
The main thing of note for me about this strand is it's the only one that uses the Coronation Street sets we are oh-so-familiar with, as the characters are not attending the wedding (which was shot on location & new sets). So, besides the colour grade, how does the cinematography keep it visually interesting for us given that none of the locations are novel? Well, we see no.6 in a new way - unlit and from the inside looking out; we see all the streetlights/fairy lights/lit-up signage of the Rosamund Street Medical Centre out of focus and thus (because of the shallow depth of field) bokeh-ified (pretty!); and we see the Chariot Sq Hotel lit differently and just generally looking softer, again thanks to the shallow depth of field of the shots (the focus is always on Lisa so whether she's in the foreground or the background, the opposite is out of focus). Plus, rather than lots of static camera work, we have an increased use of tracking shots (Kit crossing the road, tracking through the hotel as the Swains approach the lift, following Lisa to the hotel reception desk, and tracking down Lisa as she writes on & tears off the post-it note, then tracking back up her as she hands it over).
