Ali M @AliCatRabbit Dec 28 This is a woeful depiction of teenagers that pales in comparison to any other coming of age movie I have ever seen. Total trash. Zero substance. Full of plot holes and no development of characters at all. I only watched it because of the high rating it got on here. It makes no sense. It’s so banal and unbelievable and just terrible. It's everything that's been covered in every coming of age high school movie you can think of. But it's all done first rate. Really good cinematography, hilarious rauchy sharp humor that never misses a beat and feels so natural. It doesn't result to using a bunch of millenial/Gen Z slang terms or trying to be cool. It's really smart and clever stuff that gets chuckles and real big laughs 90% of the time. Music is really good too but I wish it was a bit more catchy on its own. Everything else is masterful. Aside from the raunchy humor the other two things that make this soar is Steinfeld & the pacing. This is her film and she is the star carrying this thing on her back and hits it out of the park. In a span of minutes you'll hit every emotion a teen goes through. Nervous, disgusted, sad, angry, and everything in between. And it just never stops throwing so many crazy situations and just making you feel like your in a whirlwind of emotions, crazy situations, and laughs all at once. It's overwhelming. It knows perfectly when to make you laugh and when to be serious and cool it very naturally without overcorrecting. The characters are beyond flawed, fasinating, and funny. And despite how flawed and sometimes terrible they are you never dislike them and root for everyone to succeed. One final note, the best moments are with Woody & Hailee together. They are hilarious with his dead pan delivery being a perfect match for Hailee's spastic anxiety driven character. Everyone should give this a try once. See more Mason M Aug 4 I would say that I'm a connoisseur of coming of age comedy drama films, it's one of my favorite genres. And The Edge of Seventeen was a riveting, creative, and hilarious watch. Though it was a bit darker than I expected, I still really enjoyed this film. The writing and plot was a great balance between realism where there isn't really that much of an actual plot, yet enough cohesion for me to still be riveted and immersed in the plot. The writing comedically was also just as good, everything the Woody Harrelson character said had me bursting out with laughter. Hailee Steinfeld's performance was also really impressive as one of the better teenage performances I've seen in a coming of age film. And I won't spoil it, but the ending was one of the most satisfying endings to a film I've seen in a long time. To anyone who enjoys the coming of age comedy drama, The Edge of Seventeen is an immersive, immensely well made, and hilarious film that really left me smiling by the end. Whether it is the struggle after the father's death, the lost of her friend and a estranged relationship, she showed with the right amount of emotion and action. Woody Harrelson was a good supporting character for Steinfield because he was showing with calmness, yet honesty that he cares for the student as a teacher. The chemistry Steinfield have with the other characters was clear and filled with natural emotions.
