Co-leader of the London Symphony Orchestra violin section, violinist Roman Simovic has also developed a substantial solo career. A chamber musician as well, he was a founding member of the Rubicon String Quartet, and he is an important educator who has taught at the Royal Academy of Music in London. Simovic has numerous orchestral credits on the London Symphony's LSO Live label, and he has issued recordings with the orchestra as a soloist, including Rózsa, Bartók: Violin Concertos, released in 2024.Simovic was born in 1981 in Lviv, Ukraine, then part of the Soviet Union. His father, Igor Simovic, was a conductor who gave his son his first lessons. Simovic went on to the then-new Cetinje Music Academy in Montenegro and to the Academy of Music and Arts in Novi Sad, Serbia. He earned a master's degree from the Moscow State Conservatory. After racking up prizes in international competitions, including the Henryk Wieniawski Violin Competition, the Sion-Valais Competition, and the Premio Rodolfo Lipizer International Violin Competition, Simovic landed a chair in the Camerata Salzburg in Austria. He joined the London Symphony Orchestra in 2010 and was immediately named a leader of the violin section. As an orchestra leader, he began to accumulate credits on albums ranging from one of Tchaikovsky's Symphonies 1-3 under conductor Valery Gergiev to Paul McCartney's 2012 collection of pop standards, Kisses on the Bottom, on which he served as concertmaster.Once situated in London, Simovic began to develop a solo career as well. He has appeared with orchestras in a variety of countries, including the Mariinsky Theatre Orchestra in Russia, the Kyiv Philharmonic in Ukraine, Camerata Bern in Switzerland, and the Seoul Sinfonietta, among others. Simovic is a common sight at festivals, including at the Dubrovnik Summer Festival in Croatia, the Kotor Art Festival in Montenegro, and the Bergen Festival in Norway. He has a flourishing career as a recitalist and was a founding member of the Rubicon String Quartet. He has made several recordings as a soloist, released on LSO Live, including one of Paganini's 24 Caprices in 2018. He appeared on several albums by pop vocalist Jamie Cullum, and in 2024, he recorded Rózsa, Bartók: Violin Concertos with the London Symphony Orchestra.
