For this dress, Norman Norell exaggerated the decorative and feminine qualities of the uniform by enlarging the necktie, forming it into a bow, and rendering it in a luxurious silk faille.

This version features the customary upturned brim, but modifications to its proportion and has made it chic and charming.

In this look, she has taken the horizontal “Breton” stripes of the French Navy and combined them with a feminine lace, a juxtaposition that both highlights and challenges the masculine and feminine qualities of each material.

In this adaptation the skirt had a three-button drop front, like sailor's pants and the sash alludes to the traditional tie worn on the sailor's middy collar. With this design, Chanel revitalized a classic design from her own archive."
